TacoCat's TrEats #133: The Tastiest Noodles and Chicken Rice? 😋

image.png

Hey Hive!

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again!

So if you missed my post last week, I started writing about a hawker date that Sean and I went on after we got inspired watching different foodie videos by a local competitive eater named Zermatt! His videos mostly involve him spending $100 at local hawker centres/food courts and trying out different stalls so we decided to do something similar!

And the hawker centre we visited was a pretty well known one called Chong Pang Market & Food Centre where there are plenty of stalls specialising in a few dishes at an affordable price!

image.png

I shared 3 different dishes we tried last week, which include carrot cake, Hokkien Prawn Mee and Chwee Kueh but we also ordered other dishes like Wonton Mee from this stall that specialises in charcoal char siew pork!

image.png

Not only did they have wonton noodles but also some rice dishes too!

image.png

Wonton Mee consists of egg noodles served in a hot broth or black sauce if you order it dry, and garnished with leafy vegetables and wonton dumplings which contain prawns, pork and spring onions. It's definitely one of my favourite noodle dishes!

image.png

If you order it dry like we did (since I don't think this stall even offers a soup version), you get a small bowl of soup on the side.

Here's another look at the wonton noodles with the generous helping of charcoal char siew!

image.png

It wasn't a big portion but the amount of char siew was definitely unexpected. And it was really delicious too! The slightly sweet sauce on the roasted char siew coupled with the saucy noodles and spiciness of the chilli was perfect! And the meat was nice and tender too; not dry and chewy like some places I've tried.

image.png

It was absolutely yummy and I kept wanting to eat more! The dumplings were pretty good too, with a good amount of meat and the soupiness of the dumplings was a good contrast to the slightly crisp char siew pork.

Another dish we tried was of course Hainanese Chicken Rice! A local specialty and probably the most famous dish in Singapore; it is a dish of poached chicken and seasoned rice, served with chilli sauce and usually with cucumber garnishes.

There was only one chicken rice stall there so we tried their roasted chicken rice since that's our preferred choice over steamed.

image.png

And here is the plate of chicken rice! Sean also added a hard boiled egg on the side.

image.png

It was absolutely delicious! It had been a while since I had chicken rice but the rice was so flavourful it didn't need any more chili but the chili paired well with it too. The chicken was tender and juicy despite it being chicken breast, and the skin was good too even though it wasn't crispy (not many are anyway so no big deal).

image.png

But it was so tasty and so good! I just wanted to finish the whole plate myself but we shared it of course. The chicken rice also came with a side of soup which was a nice way to round out the meal.

image.png

It was pretty warm so we decided to end it off with a nice refreshing drink and got my favourite drink from this stall!

image.png

You can probably guess what we ordered from here - soya bean with grass jelly! It's probably my favourite drink to order from hawker centres. The soya bean is always homemade and fresh and it's only slightly sweet compared to the manufactured ones.

image.png

The grass jelly adds some chewy texture to it but is still smooth and not as chewy as pearls in bubble tea. Overall, a very nice and refreshing drink!

This had been our first hawker centre date in a long long time and we were craving all these local dishes so I was so glad to have my craving satisfied! We left with our bellies very full indeed and all the dishes in total only cost around $20! Way better than most restaurants imo.

image.png

After that we took a nice walk around the neighbourhood before going to the nearby mall to dodge the heat. It was a fun date though and I can't wait to explore more and most importantly, eat more delicious food!

If you're ever in the area or come visit Singapore, definitely visit a hawker centre here and try out as many dishes as you can too!

Thanks so much for reading!
