Los niños caídos: III [ENG/ESP]

When we finally managed to find the whereabouts of the man we were chasing, we realized that he was a Suarez. The Suarez's were the most despicable people in the county and many neighbors claimed that old Rafael, when he drank alcohol, used to rape his children. What I didn't understand was what Andy, the youngest of that family, was doing in that place.

The details would come out immediately, although the boy was trembling with fear and had warned us that they would kill him if he gave us details about what had happened. It was too sinister to have to listen to him in the middle of the woods, so we took him undercover to a location away from our area. He seemed to be paranoid, he was looking everywhere and at first we could not determine what was happening to him.

—They are going to kill me, —he said —I didn't say anything because they threatened to kill my sisters.

—But why would they kill you? What do you know, boy, tell us, we'll protect you, —I told him, although up to that point we were quite confused.

—Last Thursday my dad hit me in the head repeatedly. I was trying to protect my sister from his anger; hours before I had confessed to him that I was pregnant by the locksmith Guzman. When I saw that he wouldn't leave me alone I pushed him as hard as I could and managed to escape towards the forest; when I saw them my first instinct was to run away, but John rebuked me and invited me to be part of a "ceremony" that I would later realize was creepy.

—Creepy, but what exactly were they doing? —asked Rodriguez, while destroying a straw with his teeth —We need to know every detail in order to help you.

—I followed them into the subway tunnels of the park, but I was terrified. They all wore swastikas on black backgrounds and an animal that I didn't know what it was at first, it was in a holster. Upon entering one of the adjoining entrances, I learned that the animal in question was a German shepherd with a creepy muzzle on its snout. They then proceeded to slit its throat while the women worshipped Beelzebub and spread its blood in a bowl with a hellish stench. Everyone drank from the dog's blood and I sobbing, took a sip that almost made me vomit.

We were both disgusted at Andy Suarez's story, but we couldn't do anything to interrupt his confession. There were still many things to know, why he had gone to that place alone, how much information he could give us, and most importantly, if he had any connection to Ailyn's case.

—Then, everyone started laughing at me and shouting words that were difficult to understand. And they let me go, under the single condition that, if anyone found out because of me what had happened there, they were going to kill my family in front of my eyes. John came up to me and told me that the same thing happened to the weak as to Ailyn.

—But, Thursday was the day of Aylin's murder. What time exactly did the events you are telling us happen?

—I was going to confess that; it was past 2:00 a.m. and at that time I didn't know about Ailyn's murder until they mentioned it. It was shocking to find out what had happened to her the next morning, I couldn't believe it. And yes, I know you are wondering what I was doing alone in that place today, and the truth is I wanted to ask them to kill my dad. No one in town seems to care about our welfare or that of my sisters and I just can't take it anymore.

—I hear you Andy, but evil will never be the solution. Those kids are involved in the death of an innocent person and a few missing pets. To involve you in the occult would be fatal, but, —said Rodriguez staring at me —it occurs to me that you can be of great help to us.

—How? —said Andy and I in unison.

—Easy, we need to get the genetic profile of everyone involved in that cult. So I think it's a good idea for you to go to them about your father's murder and try, without putting yourself in danger of course, to steal cigarette butts and whatever else might help us in the case.

—Are you out of your mind Rodriguez? I am not going to risk the life of a minor to serve as bait for us. Everyone in the community knows that they practice rituals in the vicinity of the park, that, the dead animals and an eyewitness is more than enough to arrest them. We are going to extract their DNA even if we have to pull out every one of their teeth to get it, on the other hand, Andy, consider yourself from this moment on a member of the witness protection program. Don't talk to anyone, don't mention your whereabouts to anyone, not even your sisters.

We both took Andy to a nearby police station and went to our area to get reinforcements for the biggest police operation we had had so far in the community. It was only a matter of hours to determine who had killed you and to clear up any remaining doubts. This had become personal for me, from minute one.
