Whether science can long survive depends on psychology; that is, it depends on what human beings desire.

CÁNDIDA

¿Alguna vez he luchado por estar cuerdo?

CANDIDA

Have I ever struggled to be sane? I ignore it, like the situation in my head, I sense that they are only evils trying to bring us down; to divide our mind to catastrophic and discordant points, but nature does not require these distractions to proceed, it omits them and runs its course repairing along the way the undesirable things.

I was like an algorithm created to satisfy the common good. A tool forged from talent to give people the hope they desire. The world did not bow at my feet and I did not want it to, as half of my desires wanted to go unnoticed and carry on as if nothing had happened.

I was recognized for my great discoveries for dermatology, knowledge that was later used to create superior foundations and complexes for ultraviolet rays, dermatitis and severe skin irritation. I specialized in human skin care because I found it to be a very unique and lucrative business in which I could earn substantial profits to start my own laboratory.

At thirty-eight years of age, I felt that there was no more time for love. My thoughts and my passions were subject to science and anything that could make me a profit. I had no time for dating or casual relationships, I was more about enjoying solitude enraptured with new enigmas to be deciphered. I avoided human relationships, I found them a nuisance. I avoided face-to-face communications like an infectious disease; I even avoided staring, as I found them uncomfortable and unnecessary. Instead, I used electronic devices: cell phones, computers and digital mail to communicate with people with whom I had a working relationship.

I tried to completely avoid contact with the outside world and its environment, but sometimes it was unavoidable, and I would, with all the loathing in my guts, stroll through the detestable streets of my city to buy food in the markets. As a rule, I always paid for delivery service, but this was very occasionally interrupted by certain unavoidable things.

It was a tedious journey to have to go into that coarse world, with a sedimented air of poisonous pollution, unusual and annoying smells. Time seemed to pass slowly, ridiculously strange and sordid; as if it wanted to annoy me in a certain way because of the way I was. However, one day when I went grocery shopping, things took another turn, my thoughts dilated and my eyes were wide with surprise. As I passed by a clothing store, I saw her, perched in front of the display dressed so elegantly, gazing towards the horizon with an imposing air. She looked so beautiful to look at and I was captivated. I slowly approached her until I was almost in front of her. It was strange; nothing like this has ever happened to me in my life.

I went into the store and asked about it and its cost. The clerk looked at me with strange eyes, as if I were crazy and gave a denial answer. I reiterated again the cost, that money would not be a problem, and it was at that moment that the owner appeared: he was a tall, fat man, all the time he was smiling. I could tell he was a foreigner by his particular accent, he talked to me about prices and his prized model.

-Do you want to buy that mannequin? -He asked me, and during that moment his smile faded and was replaced by a confused expression.

-Yes, please tell me the price," I reiterated, as I began to feel a rising anxiety to get out of there with her.

Again, the shop owner's smile became more haughty this time, and the man finally gave me a price for buying it. No problem at all, I paid with my card and then took her inside my car. I got to my house finally, we went inside and I set her up in a nice spot. My interest was increasing every time I looked at her. A whirlwind of thoughts was drilling through my mind like never before, and I began to have outstanding ideas, some crazy, but with the right treatment, they would be quite effective.

One would think that muses are not real, but in this case I can say, they are palpable like the objects we touch. More ideas, discoveries and mixtures, were walking around in my head like an endless parade. At the back of this catwalk was she; always, watching me with her serene and fixed eyes. New things arrived, new substances and experiments. My private laboratory had never witnessed so many new and revolutionary things. I spent almost two weeks on the same plan, surrendered to having almost no results, but as I looked closely at her face; her dazzling caramel-colored plastic skin, it detailed new paths to follow. And I discovered what no scientist has ever found before: Complex Y.

Of course, to prove its effectiveness, experimentation was required and this can take months and even a whole year to be approved, but I felt satisfied that I had laid the foundation for this work. This complex, if my theories are true, will have the powerful power to graft itself onto the skin and with proper treatment, make it fifteen times better than that of pigs. It would take many decades for people to show no signs of aging; that is, a person of seventy could look like a person of twenty-five, for example.

This could lay the groundwork for cellular rejuvenation, and increase the human lifespan by several centuries, even up to a millennium. And all thanks to her: my inexhaustible source of ideas, the one who restored my faith in my work. I wanted to celebrate, so I invited her to have dinner with me that same evening. I couldn't address her without a name, so I called her "Candida", because of her inert and innocent appearance. We drank wine until we were exhausted and then went to bed for some hot sex. I will never forget that night and it made me think about many things.

Days later, my discovery was taken to the world. I received hundreds of messages from scientists wanting to work with me on my new project, as they were more than intrigued by my Complex Y. I had never received a similar ode in my life, and although I felt I could tell the public many things, I could not shout to the four winds my secret courtship with Candida; the world is not yet ready for this revelation.
