STEP 1
Sketching
Sketching is fun way to just keeping it loose and not to worry about lines at all. Keep it rough as it should be. By placing the reference card beside my sketch gives me inspiration and also to bring all the necessary things that the character is holding or wearing.
After making the rough sketch I add our 2nd layer. And here we can clean up the sketch we create into some clean line work.
That's it we create our easy linework step. Next we go to our Coloring Stage.
STEP 2
Coloring Stage
Let's add our base colors first. Add one layer below our Line art layer. In Photoshop there are lots of ways to add our base colors. By using different tools we can create the same output.
Introducing Tools that can you used.
Depending in the given circumstances you could choose one or three of them. In this case I used Lasso Tool. Powerful tool to make a freehand selections. I make a selection base on the line art that I made. Fill it in with a gray color or any color you might want.
And my favorite tool of all the Lock Transparent Pixels.
Be sure to click it and see what it does to your layer. We made a base color of gray and anything beyond that color will be lock. So our colors stay in the gray area.
Cool right! hahaha at this period we are making artwork now. But let's push through and add our shadows and lights next.
SHADOWS
We will add another layer this time on top of our line art. Set that to multiply blending mode. If you don't know where it is located.
Here you go it's in the layers panel. Oh! before you go in brush some shadows, if you want to make it stay inside the character another tip is you could control + Click on the Base Colors we created earlier. It does a selection base on the shape of the base colors.
That looks cool alright let's move to our next coloring step.
LIGHTS
Add some lights I don't know why but it's cool to add like blue lights and also some like a light of the sun hitting on our character. I'm just terrible at teaching hahah those are kind of lights though. So in this step, Add another layer this could be our 4th layer on top of the shadow layer. You could make it an Overlay or Hardlight Blending mode.
There you go for our lighting. We could see some difference from our artwork now. That's it for me for coloring stage. I then Merge all these layers to come up with one layer. Except for the background I keep that in a separate layer from my character.
Let's now go to refine this character.
STEP 3
Rendering
We are now at the end of the Stage/Process. Holy that's just 4 layers to color stage and now for the rendering. You could stay on the merged layer or create another one layer in a normal blending mode. And try to clean up as much details as to what you want to be.
It would also be cool if there is something happening around the background. So I add another layer for the background stuff.
POOOF!
I think this is already good for me I will just play along with the brightness and contrast a little bit.
That's it guys! Our final result🙌!
