The Blacksmith shop was a good place for me to find photos for this contest. These photos are from my archives and were taken at a local living history museum.
Hand forged metal horse shoes were used to protect the porous feet of horses. Like our fingernails, horse hooves are made of keratin and do not contain any pain receptors, so nailing a shoe into a hoof does not hurt. Today, horseshoes are available in a wide variety of materials and styles,
Blacksmiths made most of the iron objects used in everyday life, but horseshoeing, was their most frequent occupation. Their equipment included a furnace or forge, an anvil (a heavy block of steel or iron), tongs, and hammers.
