Today will be a rather different walk, I show you a walk around a #cemetery / graveyard in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
THE GREYFRIARS KIRKYARD in EDINBURGH

With graves /names that #inspired JK Rowling into creating her #characters in her #books in the series of HARRY POTTER.

A closer look at Google maps reveals the following names, for ease I highlighted them for you:

The exact location, you have to wander around for. As they are not correctly shown on Google maps. 😎😉

It states:
”Burials have been taking place since the late 16th century, and a number of notable Edinburgh residents are interred at Greyfriars.”

”Greyfriars takes its name from the Franciscan friary on the site (the friars of which wear grey habits), which was dissolved in 1560. The churchyard was founded in August 1562 after Royal sanction was granted to replace the churchyard at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.”

Let’s have a look around now:

Entering we see a large field of grass and graves in the distance…

In search of the “famous names” I look around corners and see interesting structures, shadows around the graves.

Every grave in this graveyard is so different. Their styles… the age… somehow, I do love wandering around graveyards. As sometimes the structures are just stunning, just alone from an architectural perspective 🤓😎 depicting different eras.

Looking at the details… the work that went into them. Nothing like you see nowadays.

Fascinating 🤓

They tell stories…

The location on Google maps show us here is one of the graves we are looking for… but nothing is there. It must be on the other side of this wall somewhere.

So walking all the way around, trying to aim for the same direction…

Yes, I found the first name on our list to visit.

Here we see the grave of THOMAS RIDDLE- Lord Voldemort himself 😎

The first character out of the novels from J.K. Rowling in the series of HARRY POTTER that we are looking for.

Let’s see if we can find the other ones too. 😁💃🏻 And we walk further around.

Passing by this rather large grave.

I went with Black and White here. As it so fitted better the mood.

One in colour… it was a cold but dry day in Edinburgh Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 this morning. So the colours are rather pale.

A little bit further.
Yes… we find number 2 on our list.

Here we see McGONAGALL it is not the exact location of the grave but more a tombstone.

It states:
”I am your Gracious Majesty
ever faithful to Thee,
William McGonagall, The Poor Poet,
That lives in Dundee.
W McG 6th Sept, 1877”

As we walk further I notice this grave, two figures praying. So many details, but most are weathered.

We see some separated graves, behind walls with gates. Some are open and I peak inside.

Again here the Black and White photography fitted much better. 😎

And we found another name on our list.

Here we see this grave, where ELIZABETH MOODIE is the spouse of James Baird and it mentions their 3 daughters.

Let’s wander further… as there is still much more to see.

Peaking inside another grave separated by walls and gates I notice this wall…

And the grave in front of it.

A little bit further I see a elaborate grave… so much inside of that little area. The columns… the details.

Zooming out we see even more. Statues on top.

If you look closely to the figure… I believe I see two heads. One is lying in front of it and the head from the statue looks almost like a skull to me.

The side inscriptions.

And a plaque on the gate.

It states:
”What Clement was, how great that Little were
This citizens, that Bibliotheck declare.
This noble pair of brethren did contend
In merits great, each other to transcend
For both did good: This to the mother town
That to the muses; whence came their renown.”

It captivated me…

I know there were 2 more graves with the name Potter and the name that inspired Rufus Scrimgeour - Louisa Scrymgeour Wedderburn.
But I didn’t find those… next time 😉

As we are walking down the hill and just before we leave the graveyard we see the statue of this dog.

Zooming out a bit.

It is a memorial for the dog Bobby, which is said; he sat for 14 years at his owners grave… and died in 1872.
