WORLDPHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST • ROUND#18 • AIRPORTS

I'm not sure this picture is okay for this competition. It's not a photo from the airport building.

January 2020 I flew back to Belgium from the Philippines. The night before my domestic flight from Cebu to Manila I heard the news of the eruption of the Taal volcanco. It was unsure if I could fly and thus I spended most of the night to find out what I had to do. Should I stay in my home or do I have to go to the airport (3 hour ride). In the morning my contact person in Cebu told me to come over as a few flight might go out. Because I had a international connecting flight my change was high to get one on of the few planes.

So I ended up in Cebu Airport. All flights were cancelled and it was very unclear what would happen. We just could wait and wait ... Cebu Airport is a very busy airport and I have no idea how many people were stranded there. There was no seating anymore, so I found myself a free spot on the floor. Sitting in one of the bars was not an option, so I bought a salad and the floor was my huge table!

While I was sitting there I overlooked the crowd. So many people start to argue, getting mad, upset, start yelling. I don't understand those reactions. Okay, it's not funny. But if they cancel flights because of a volcano eruption they do it for our safety. It costs the companies so much money to keep the airplanes on the ground, there's a reason why they do that.
Anyway, I made the best out of it, took some pictures, drank a lot of coffee and enjoyed myself on my laptop.

My personal survival kit when travelling: passport, credit card, cigarettes and cookies.

In the late evening 1 plane was going to Manila and I was lucky. It was still unclear if I could get a plane out of the capital and when, but at least I was one step closer. So in the middle of the night I arrived in Manila. The next day the flight traffic was heavily disturbed but again I was lucky and could travel.

Stay positive!

One advise if you need to take multiple flight with different companies: make sure you plan some extra time in between the flights. I always go 1 day before to Manila because of the many cancelations and delays with the domestic flights. It happened to me once that I lost my connection and I had to rebook my ticket and it costs me a lot of money.
