Peeling Onions

It may be tiring to just be El mudo, the mute. All days must be tired days. It’s not just about the never-ending hard work. It’s the invisibility. Like onions, he too has layers, but people just see his work. The vegetables at the Gina store look good because he makes them look good. He carries the dirt and smell of rotten vegetables and fruits so that people do not have to deal with them.

No one knows his real name. He is just another loquito (little crazy one) who took the place of El cojo (lame or cripple) before him. No one even noticed when el cojo died. He just stopped coming. Living in the streets is tiring.

No one knows if el mudo has a family, children maybe? Did he ever have dreams, friends, loves?

It’s hard to have friends here when you’re handicapped. You get some attention for a while, but not real affections. Stray dogs or cats may get more of that. You tease a dog or cat and the Attorney General will twit the arrest and prosecution of those involved. You abuse el mudo, el cojo, el mocho, or la loca and not even Pedro Lucas will mention them on Facebook.

I guess some days may not be tired days. There is always alcohol and an occasional good meal. There is always a crazy woman who will provide carnal relief. I’m sure if they could tell their stories, we’d be amazed at how much we take for granted. It is harder if you can’t speak, though. Sign language can only transmit so much.
