A trip to the Caldera

Santorini (Thira)

This is my second trip here, and I am sure I will be back here many times. There are endless reasons to visit Santorini. For those who do not know where that is, if you click on the hyperlink, google map will take you there. It is part of a group of islands called Cyclades at the Aegean Sea, which is part of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

It is widely said that nowhere in the world there is this much man-made white than in Cyclades, and Santorini is probably one of most picturesque of all greek islands. Numereous photoshoots, movies and honeymoon pictures were shot there and being shot every day. Even on greek island standard, which is a very high standard to begin with (yeah, there are places like Mykonos, Paros and Naxos to compete!) Santorini is stunningly pretty in almost any angle you look at it. Towns built on the cliffside of a giant volcanic caldera, which is now filled with ocean water defies all logic of human habitation. I can probably write for hours about the Minoan Eruption of second millennium of Bronze Age, which created the present shape of the island and desctroyed the Minoan civilization, but I won't on this post. I have hours left of walk the narrow steps and streets of Firastefani, where I am staying, and I should focus more on that!

People dress up, get to shape, just to be on this island. Even me, I personally like to enjoy wearing blue and white only when I am here. The local food of Fava, Tzatziki and Ouzo along with fresh fish is something I can live on forever. Where in the world you can have a boat at the roof of a building as a decoration and made it look good!

The doors are amazing, the usual blue and white with Bougainvillea basically everywhere. Everyday there are cruise ships that arrive in the caldera and stay there for the day. The tourist flock the streets of Fira and Oia, which if you stay there, may feel a bit stifling, but trust me that is just usually the main streets (stairs! more on that later), empty areas can still be found. Especially early morning and after sun down street are usually empty.

I have thousands of pictures and many interesting experiences of share, but my time is limited today, and my balcony, the first picture is from there is inviting me. So let me go and sit there, and watch time pass by!
