| Time for another little church on a hillside. It's the Church Ag. Athanasiou Petroto (Ι.Ν. Αγ. Αθανασίου Πετρωτού) or better the Church of St. Athanasius. The 'Petroto' either refers to the street in the village of Mavromandila it is located at, or to the community of 3 villages to which Mavromandila belongs. | Mal wieder Zeit für eine kleine Kirche am Berg. Es handelt sich um die Kirche Ag. Athanasiou Petroto (Ι.Ν. Αγ. Αθανασίου Πετρωτού) bzw. die Kirche des Heiligen Athanasius. Das 'Petroto' im Namen bezieht sich entweder auf die Straße im Dorf Mavromandila, zu dem die Kirche gehört, oder zu der Gemeinde aus 3 Dörfern, zu der Mavromandila gehört. |

| I noticed the church from afar when I was cycling through the orchards in the south-east of Patras. Although I didn't want to go up that high, because I have problems with my brakes (never again disc brakes!), I couldn't resist to go uphill to take a closer look. | Die Kirche fiel mir von ferne auf, als ich durch die Olivenhaine im Südosten von Patras radelte. | Directly beside the church is a small graveyard with the typical Greek tombs. The cemetery is so small, that there are no walkways between the graves. If you want to change flowers or a grave candle, you have to walk over the neighbouring tombs. | Direkt neben der Kirche ist ein kleiner Friedhof mit den typisch griechischen Grüften. Er ist so klein, daß es keine Wege zwischen den Grabreihen gibt. Wer die Blumen oder Grablichter wechseln will, muß über benachbarten Grüfte klettern. |

| As you can see below, the tombs are quite solidly constructed holes in the ground. Unlike in the graves which are common in Germany, the dead will not be eaten by worms. I wonder, how decomposition works here. With the dry climate, the bodies will probably mummify. | Wie man unten sieht, sind die Grüfte solide in den Boden eingelassen. | St. Athanasius is btw. one of the people responsible for our modern Christian understanding of the Trinity. & that's pretty much all there is to say about this church. Great location, particularly if you like hiking in the mountains, but at least from the outside a bit disappointing. & now, just a few more pics: | St. Athanasius ist übrigens einer derjenigen, die für unser modernes, christliches Verständnis der Dreifaltigkeit verantwortlich sind. & viel mehr gibt es über diese Kirche nicht zu sagen. Tolle Lage, besonders wenn man gerne in den Bergen wandert, aber vom Äußeren her doch etwas enttäuschend. & jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder: |
