Hello everyone! In my first post about Tbilisi, I already showed you my first impressions. Today, I would like to dive one level deeper into the Georgian capital with you. In the last few days, I've been off the beaten tourist tracks and explored the districts of Vake and Saburtalo. I also want to show you how I tried to live the Georgian lifestyle in terms of accommodation, food and transportation.
Hallo zusammen! In meinem ersten Bericht über Tiflis habe ich euch bereits meine ersten Eindrücke gezeigt. Heute möchte ich mit euch eine Ebene tiefer in die georgische Hauptstadt eintauchen. In den letzten Tagen habe ich mich nämlich auch abseits der ausgetretenen Touristenpfade bewegt und die Stadtviertel Vake und Saburtalo erkundet. Außerdem zeige ich euch, wie ich versucht habe, was Unterkunft, Essen und Verkehrsmittel betrifft, den georgischen Lifestyle zu leben.
Vake
Vake is currently the most modern part of Tbilisi. Many expats and digital nomads live here. I began my walk through the neighbourhood in the well-kept Vake Park, which is currently undergoing renovation work. I particularly liked the two twisted twin towers (Axis Towers). I found it funny that the logos of the international brands are all translated into Georgian letters. Below you can find a few examples.
Vake ist aktuell der modernste Teil von Tiflis. Hier leben besonders viele Expats und Digitale Nomaden. Meinen Spaziergang durch das Viertel begann ich im gepflegten Vake Park, in dem zur Zeit leider Umbauarbeiten stattfinden. Besonders gut gefielen mir die beiden verdrehten Zwillingstürme (Axis Towers). Witzig fand ich, dass die Logos der internationalen Marken alle in die georgische Schrift übersetzt werden. Nachfolgend findet ihr ein paar Beispiele.
Saburtalo & Metro Tbilisi
To get to Saburtalo, I used the Tbilisi metro. It has two lines that cover most of the city. Admittedly, the stations and trains are old, noisy and stuffy. On the other hand, you feel like you're back in Soviet times, which is of course an interesting experience. In addition, you can get from A to B quickly and the price of one Lari per trip (currently approx. 33 cents) is unbeatable.
Um nach Saburtalo zu gelangen, benutzte ich die U-Bahn von Tiflis. Sie verfügt über zwei Linien, die einen Großteil des Stadtgebiets abdecken. Zugegeben, die Stationen und Züge sind alt, laut und stickig. Andererseits fühlt man sich hier in Sowjet-Zeiten zurückversetzt, was natürlich ein interessantes Erlebnis ist. Außerdem kommt man schnall von A nach B und der Preis von einem Lari pro Fahrt (aktuell ca. 33 Cent) ist unschlagbar günstig.
Saburtalo actually has little to offer in terms of sights and tourism. Also here you can admire classic Soviet architecture. The apartment blocks look depressing and old, the pavements unkempt and run-down. Only the modern City Mall is an exception. In this district you can really experience what life in Tbilisi feels like outside the centre.
Saburtalo hat touristisch eigentlich kaum etwas zu bieten. Auch hier kann man klassische Sowjet-Architektur bewundern. Die Wohnblöcke wirken trist und alt, die Gehsteige ungepflegt und heruntergekommen. Einzig die moderne City Mall bildet hier eine Ausnahme. In diesem Viertel kann man wirklich erleben, wie sich das Leben in Tiflis außerhalb des Zentrums anfühlt.
Food & Accomodation
If you want to live like a Georgian, you have to try the local cuisine. The rustic cellar restaurants are particularly recommendable. For a drink, I recommend the traditional Eastern European "Compote", which is made from boiled fruits. For the main course, don't miss the stuffed dumplings called " Khinkali". I also found some culinary highlights in the supermarkets, such as traditional Georgian lemonade or a kind of chilled chocolate bar filled with vanilla cream. Also worth mentioning are the many fruit and vegetable stalls that can be found on every street corner.
Wer wie ein Georgier leben will, der muss natürlich auch die einheimische Küche probieren. Besonders empfehlenswert sind die urigen Keller-Lokale. Als Getränk empfehle ich euch das traditionell osteuropäische "Kompott", das aus gekochten Früchten hergestellt wird. Als Hauptspeise dürft ihr euch auf keinen Fall die gefüllten Teigtaschen "Khinkali" entgehen lassen. Auch in den Supermärkten fand ich das ein oder andere kulinarische Highlight, wie traditionell georgische Limonade oder eine Art gekühlten, mit Vanillecreme gefüllten Schokoriegel. Erwähnenswert sind auch die vielen Obst- und Gemüsestände, die man an jeder Straßenecke findet.
To feel a bit like a Georgian, I didn't book a fancy hotel room, but a flat in the old town. The condition of the building was not the best, as you can see from the photo with the stairs. But the apartment itself was fine and the view of the typical Georgian courtyard was a delight at any time of the day or night.
Um mich ein bisschen wie ein Georgier zu fühlen, buchte ich kein schickes Hotelzimmer, sondern eine Wohnung in der Altstadt. Der Zustand des Gebäudes war nicht der beste, wie ihr an dem Foto mit der Treppe erkennen könnt. Das Apartment selbst war aber in Ordnung und der Blick auf den typisch georgischen Innenhof zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit ein Genuss.
