Control Light WR new meta? + Gameplay Video

controllight_preview.png

Hey there! I've returned to you with possible new meta deck! As you see it's Control Light list. Not so popular nowadays, but since Deception was nerfed, you can give it a try in your WR event. This deck is not so easy to play and perform good, play couple of games and practice with friends or streamers.

What's the most exciting about this deck is that Control Light actually doesn't need Demogorgons (unlike other Control Decks) and I don't have any 😄. Helmna The Spear of Life is the great substitute for Demo in this archetype. Sooo this deck is pretty cheap (~$70).

At the end of this post I'll attach link to a gameplay video vs Aggro decks. Gameplay against Control decks is coming on Saturday. In the video description you will find time stamps to easy navigate between different matches. If you like the video, support me by clicking on a 👍 button and subscribe to my YT channel.

TLDR begins here

God Powers

Before we start to discuss the deck and its possibilities I want to say a couple of words about god powers in this deck. Most of the time (like 99%) you will chose Heal god power, but in some matches (it will be Aggro Nature) you might chose Lysander's Honor god power which decrease the strength of the enemy's creature. Since Aggro Nature has many drops with 1 attack, you can simple use your god power to make these creatures useless untill buff. And not spend your resources to deal with that bodies early.

Main Idea

main_cards.png

I'll suggest you to watch my video below to better understand some of the possible combos you can perform with these cards. But the main idea is to stall your opponent, control some early creatures till 7 mana comes, make your opponent use his resources at max and play Lysander's Mercy to put all creatures at the bottom of your decks. Other way is to put order on all opponents creatures and show your big boy Archpriest of Parthene (that could easily get stats 17/17 or even more).
Both Radiant Embalmer and Inescapable Duty are ways to restore your resources or just cycle your mana. I'll show you one of them:

  1. Play 2 Radiant Embalmers and get back and resource you need (make sure they'll come to your void)
  2. Empowered Inescapable Duty brings you back 2 Embalmers with 4/6 stats.
  3. Play Radiant Embalmer to get Inescapable Duty back.
  4. And so on.

Of course, this cycle is very optional depending on the opponent and his deck.

You shall not pass

frontlines.png

My list offers different frontlines that could be very useful against aggro decks and Relic Combo War in particular (but still this matchup will be hard, because you need to draw and return your frontlines in time).

  • Kadmos - is and early frontline that will buff armor to your Archpriest
  • Guild Enforcer - is just very good card
  • Helmna - is a big frontline that could actually win you ton of games because you can buff attack just with your god power (or other heals that you have in this deck)
  • Polyhymnia - is a final boss at 9 mana. If you don't have Poly, just use Thaeriel's Anvil which is also pretty decent 9 drop for this deck

Healing is caring

Besides the healing god power, you have some spells and creatures that can also heal you and your board.

  • Sern might be one of the best cards from Divine Order extension and can draw you many cards (remember that creatures with regen after healing will trigger card draw from Sern, so be careful).
  • Parthene Proscenium was undervalued before in this archetype. But against those strenght stealing creatures its good, because you can instantly buff attack of your creature and it will be harder to "Bound by her Will" your Kadmos, Radiant Embalmer or smth else.

Board Control + Removals

board_control.png

Some of these you actually want to see in your starting hand (except divine judgement, but it can be useful against early Patient Pickpocket). Doesn't much to say about them, but I'll try:

  • Divine Judgement - destroys cerature even through ward (because it naturally obliterates the creature, helpful against deck that use void)
  • Eucos in Eclipse - a musthave card against anubians and its priestesses and necromancers, it also deals with echo cards or hidden ones (like Armor Lurker).
  • Light's Levy - is a standard card in most of the Light decks (though in Agrro most of the times you'll see now Thaeric Extortionist).
  • Wrong Path - is good to remove a frontline for one turn and draw you the answer for the next turn, Sometimes you use it to slow down the tempo of your opponent.

Order + Stall

order_stall.png

These cards as much important as those in the begginning. Order is a very interesting mechanic that give you a possibility to remove a frontline (for a couple of turns), make the creatures of your opponent useless laying on the board and just wainting when the order becomes 0.

  • Censure - is a strong options to stall 2 creatures, increase buff for Archpriest, remove the frontline and go face
  • Inquisitor Informant - can also stall a creture + now you have a 2/3 body on the board that could be traded (and this damage doesn't go to your face)
  • Line in the sand - is a great stall for one turn (waiting till 7 mana and Lysander's Mercy)
  • Lips Are Sealed - is like your win condition in a lot of matches. You opponent fills board with creatures 3+ attack, or buff them. And this card make them useless for a couple of turns while you can set up your Archpriest or wait till the Lysander's Mercy)

Gameplay

The main idea of gameplay is that you stall your opponent till the late game when you can drop your big Archpriest, Helmna and buff her or Polyhymnia as a final boss (not so many decks that can easily deal with Poly). In most cases opponent will concede after he will see a Poly.

Other way is to slowly control the board and give tons of order on turn 5 to all opponent's creatures (or almost all) and the next turn pip + Archpriestand he will finish the game in 2 turns. Stalling your opponents creatures with Line in the Sand when orders come to the 0 is brilliant. If you don't have it, perform attack and Lysander's Mercy there.

But of course there are drawbacks in this deck. It can absolutely do nothing to combo decks (techers, dralamar, over the line, corpse explosion, etc). The only combo deck that Control Lighy can deal with is Relic War, but it will be hard matchup. Beware of Deception with Cutthroat Inside that can steal your Embalmers and Inescapable Duties. Aaaand your game could possibly last around 20 minutes ⌚️.
