An Epic Birthday Night Out
First off, I have to apologise for the quality of the photos in this post. I have done my best using GIMP photo editing software... but as they say around these parts 'you can't polish a turd.'
Pretty much everyone on this night out was smashed, and whenever I asked them to take a picture because I was going to write a blog about it I was met with groans, grumbles and in some cases gurgles as they attempted to boo me mid-quaff.
It wasn't really my birthday on Saturday... but ya know no one wants to go out on a weekday so I rallied the usual suspects and we forayed into town to hit up some bars and pubs that we're probably far too old for, but I've always thought growing old disrespectfully is the best way forward.
So, me and some friends I've known for over 20 years (sht that is making me feel old) decided to go on a full debauched pub/bar crawl and hit up some of our favourite spots.
Starting at my Local The Cambridge
This is a cross between a local pub and a student haunt, they have some decent real ales but I'm not really the fella to talk about ales as ever since my chronic illness hit epic levels all I can drink is lager and the occasional cocktail.
Straight up... real ale makes me sick as a dog, the moment I drink it, and also for days afterwards.
So, I took a picture of my friend's pint of Shropshire gold which he assured me was very palatable, and I'm afraid that is all I have for the ale aficionados in the BEER community.
But this blog is more about the madness of a real pub/bar crawl than the drinks consumed... as evidenced by what I spent most of the night drinking 😂
I'm fully aware that I risk a gang of CAMARA toughs turning up at my local now to rough me up and force a pint of a decent IPA down my gullet just to prove that I'm a stinking lier about my illness and that ale is the food of the gods 🤣 All I can say is... bring it CAMERA snobs, I used to work in a pub which won a CAMERA award 2 years in a row when I was a student, I know how to deal with angry ale enthusiasts. Simply make motions that you are going to pour their half-pint down the sink and it becomes like a scene from a western... pistols at dawn
But enough of my CAMARA basshing ways, they're a fine bunch of lads... as long as you don't mind serving up 15 different half pints of ale and being asked which is more hoppy and which is more floral.
We Hung around outside in the sun for a while until the evening waned and it was time to move on to one of Liverpool's many pool halls. I was dominating on the table at Riley's and also the locals were shall we say, a little loud having indulged in a some type of Columbian marching powder 😜
So off we went to Boston Pool Loft, another great games and booze spot in the city centre where they also provide the ancient sport of shuffleboard.
Santa Chupitos - Par Street Cocktail Bar
This is where it all started to get a bit hazy. I remember getting something with tequila and rum in it, with an assortment of fruit-type stuff at which point I descended into giggle mode which is pretty much what happens if I drink anything with hard liquor in it these days.
It wasn't too rammed in Santa Chupitos, we managed a dance and a few more cocktails before everyone got distracted by the idea of another bar.
So off we went to the next best place...
NQ64 - The Bar That Takes Me Back to My Youth
This bar in Liverpool is painted in luminous paint like an Amsterdam coffee shop where you can while away the night drinking moderately priced beer and playing Tekken 3.
Or if you're looking for something that requires a little more coordination and concentration a round or two on Guitar Hero... which I have to admit I got battered at by the girls who hadn't drunk as much as me, it being my birthday and all.
At least that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!😉
There were a couple of moments where the epic levels of booze could have spilled over into silliness, but tbh after you pass a certain age even a gapyar southern student shouting YOLO at me while I do shots didn't really rub me up the wrong way. Fck it, Mr Millenial was right, and I know WTF your Abbreviation means and I'm going to YOLO by necking these shots FTW 😂
The Night Ended with Pizza at Beer Engine
Beer engine has a 5am licence, and there are also pool tables. But by this point I couldn't remember between shots which colour I was so after a few games we gave up and just stuffed our faces with their amazing pizza.
This is also where I got the pic of me leaning on the motorbike with a barman out of shot who kept saying if I knocked it over he wouldn't be able to control what the bouncers would do!
But, well... everything seems fine at 4 am in the morning when you're at one of your favourite bars and it is only 3 minute's walk to your apartment.
After all, I only go this crazy once a year ✨
Thanks for reading about my birthday madness 🙂
