Versión español

Hola Amigos Hivers,

Hello Friends Hivers,

As always a pleasure to greet you. My name is Leo Lara and I begin by wishing you a day full of success and blessings.

Often every sports lover feels identified with one or more sports personalities either by their feats, achievements, titles or simply because you share some characteristic, point of view, nationality, culture and even in some cases you identify yourself by sharing beliefs and customs. That is why this time I am writing about two of my favorite athletes.

In general I have always identified with athletes whose careers serve as inspiration for us fans, I usually do not only focus on the achievements and titles obtained by a sports figure; I think that many athletes do not know it, but many sports fans -as is my case- like to perceive the positive energy that a well-focused athlete transmits to his followers throughout his career.

Even small acts like the case of the Spanish athlete Ivan Fernandez who guided another competitor to the finish line regardless of the fact that in this way the Spaniard would lose the opportunity to come first in an important cross country race, are the acts that personally bring me closer to a figure or sports team.

Well, now without further ado, let's start this way.

A case of social and geographical affinity.

Andrés, like me, were born in humble parishes within the city of Caracas, Venezuela. As a child, this great athlete was a great personal motivation for me, because I thought that it is possible to get ahead in life regardless of where we are.

What impressed me the most about the “Big Cat” Andrés Galarraga is that despite being a person with a large frame, this did not prevent him from having great agility when making big plays in his usual position –First base-. I had the opportunity to see Galarraga play on several occasions at the university stadium in the city of Caracas, at that time you could see at a glance that he was an outstanding baseball player.

In addition, what is amazing about this great Venezuelan athlete is his great spirit that allowed him to fight against the adversities that were presented to him throughout his successful career. After some injuries and finding himself in the middle of his career Galarraga had to reinvent his way of hitting, this is where one of the most influential people in Andrés' career appears, he is already retired as a player at that time, the coach batter Don Baylor with whom he established a working relationship that led the player from Caracas to improve his batting dynamics and become one of the most effective sluggers in the Major Leagues.

Since then there has been a metamorphosis of such magnitude that he became one of the most fearsome hitters of the 90s, in which he won a batting title (1993), a home run title (1996) and two RBIs (1996 and 1997).

But without a doubt, one of the greatest episodes of self-improvement that I have seen in an athlete is that of Galarraga. I remember that in February 1999 "El Gran Gato" was diagnosed with a cancerous lymphoma that threatened the career of this great baseball player. . It was incredible to me to see him overcome cancer and return a year later with the Atlanta Braves in what was deservedly billed as MLB's comeback of the year.

The phenomenon

The first time I saw Ronaldo play on television was months before the World Cup in USA 94, at that time the Brazilian team had two great immovable players in its tactical scheme, who were they? Nothing more and nothing less than Bebeto and Romario.

Ronaldo was barely 17 years old -by that time- and despite the fact that the future galactic's debut was quite acceptable, this skillful player did not play a single minute in the 1994 World Cup. It was not until after that world cup that Ronaldo "The Phenomenon" could occupy a permanent place in the front line of La Canarinha. After that, Ronaldo had to wait four years to debut in a World Cup.

Before coming to play in the World Cup in France, Ronaldo was already a legend in Barcelona.

el fenomeno.pngRonaldo Nazario: 25 years after the beginning of his era with Barcelona

I really can't say that Ronaldo is the best soccer player in his style, what I can assure you is that "The Phenomenon" was the first player with that type of unstoppable characteristics that would soon become a trend in modern soccer players and that we now see very frequently in players like Mbappé, Cristiano Ronaldo or Erling Haaland.

In the 1999/2000 season playing for Inter in Italy, this skillful player suffered a serious injury affecting one of the tendons in his right knee on a couple of occasions, which left Ronaldo off the pitch for more than a year.

The patellar tendon is basically what allows us to extend the knee, and it is essential for kicking in soccer.

I think that one of the things that made me even more of a fan of this incredible player was that despite having suffered a serious injury (total rupture of the patellar tendon) this player overcame the most worrying forecasts that said he might not be able to play. never more.

Ronaldo, after undergoing a reconstruction operation that lasted hours, had to undergo harsh sections of therapy and muscular exercise, in addition to struggling with uncertainty and doubts as many said that he would never be the same player again.

I consider that Ronaldo Nazário's return to the fields winning the World Cup for Brazil in 2002 was one of the most motivating sports feats that I have been able to follow throughout my experience as a fan.

In Greek mythology, the phoenix is a symbol of resilience, an ability that some people have to get ahead in adverse situations, I consider that these two great athletes are great examples of life for all people who go through difficult times, because it is in this moment where it can be shown what we are made of.

For this reason, specifically at this time when there may be some doubts and uncertainty for publicly known reasons, I extend my invitation to continue creating and growing in Hive; There is still a long way to go, let's keep moving forward.
