Bears! Oh, cute!

What image do you have of bears?　Is it a dangerous animal?　A pest to crops?　I am sure that many people have such an image of bears.　I used to not have a good image of bears either.　I think the reason for this was the image of bears as vermin as reported by the media.

Although bears have always had a bad image, their population seems to be decreasing year by year in Japan.　In my hometown of Tokushima, Shikoku, the number of bears has been reduced to about 30, and it is said that the population may be reduced by half by 2030.

It is true that bears are not always good for humans, but to bears, vegetables grown by farmers and nuts in the forest are the same.　It seems that many of the reasons that bears are coming down to the villages in the forests are caused by humans, who have artificially planted trees in the forests that do not produce nuts in the first place, which has reduced the amount of food in the forests.　The coexistence of humans and animals, and humans and nature, is a difficult issue, but I feel that we have already come to a point where we must consider this issue.

Seeing the little bear playing in the water dispelled the image of a scary bear and gave me an image of a cute bear.　I thought that the challenge is to create an environment where bears and humans can coexist while maintaining a good distance and avoiding interaction.　How can we do that?　I hoped to convey the answer to the villagers and bears in Shikoku.

意外とかわいい熊ちゃん

熊に関して皆さんはどの様なイメージを持っていますか？　危険な動物？　作物をあらす害獣？　きっとそのようなイメージを持っている人が多いのではないでしょうか？　わたしもかつては熊に対して、あまり良いイメージは持っていませんでした。　その理由はやはり、メディアが報道する害獣としての熊のイメージがあったからだと思います。

悪いイメージばっかり持っていた熊たちですが、その個体数は日本では年々減り続けているようです。　わたしの故郷である四国、徳島では３０頭程度までその数を減らし、２０３０年にはその個体数は半減する可能性もあると言われています。

確かに人間にとって良いことばかりではない熊の存在ですが、熊にとっては農家が育てる野菜も森にある木の実も同じです。　そもそも森に木の実がならない木を造林して、森での食料が少なくなり里山まで熊が下りてきている原因は人間に起因しているものが多くあるようです。　人間と動物、人間と自然の共存は難しい課題ですがその課題を考えなければいけない時にすでに来ているような気がします。

水遊びをしている小熊をみていると、怖かった熊のイメージも払拭され、可愛い熊のイメージがついてきました。　課題は熊と人間が良い距離を保ちつつ、交わりを避けながらお互いが共存できる環境を作ることだと思いました。　どうしたらいいんだろう？　その答えを四国にいる村人や熊たちに伝えることが出来たらと思いました。

Vilken bild har du av björnar?　Är det ett farligt djur?　En skadegörare för grödor?　Jag är säker på att många människor har en sådan bild av björnar.　Jag hade inte heller någon bra bild av björnar tidigare.　Jag tror att orsaken till detta var den bild av björnar som skadedjur som medierna gav.

Även om björnar alltid har haft en dålig image verkar deras population minska år för år i Japan.　I min hemstad Tokushima, Shikoku, har antalet björnar minskat till cirka 30, och det sägs att populationen kan ha halverats fram till 2030.

Det är sant att björnar inte alltid är bra för människor, men för björnar är grönsaker som odlas av jordbrukare och nötter i skogen samma sak.　Det verkar som om många av orsakerna till att björnarna kommer ner till byarna i skogarna är orsakade av människan, som på konstgjord väg har planterat träd i skogarna som inte producerar nötter i första hand, vilket har minskat mängden mat i skogarna.　Samexistensen mellan människor och djur och mellan människor och natur är en svår fråga, men jag anser att vi redan har kommit till en punkt där vi måste ta ställning till denna fråga.

När jag såg den lilla björnen leka i vattnet försvann bilden av en skrämmande björn och jag fick en bild av en söt björn.　Jag tänkte att utmaningen är att skapa en miljö där björnar och människor kan samexistera samtidigt som de håller ett gott avstånd och undviker interaktion.　Hur kan vi göra det?　Jag hoppades kunna förmedla svaret till byborna och björnarna i Shikoku.
