This is my entry for this week's topic "Quiet Desert". When I read the word desert I couldn't get my mind off the idea of recording another emblematic waltz from Venezuelan repertoire: Sombra en los Médanos by Rafael Sánchez López. This is one of those pieces any player of this traditional music starts to learn from early on during their musical careers.
There are countless versions of this song, but as you might have noticed, I tend to go instrumental. My idea for this was inspired by the recording of Dr. Jesús Sevillano which is a masterpiece. This one comes from the group "Jesús Sevillano y su Sexteto de Cuerdas" in the production "Canciones Venezolanas Puras". I didn't play that arrangement, but tried to do something involving more voices.
Looking up around the internet I found a choir arrangement that is incredible. It comes by the mind of Gustavo Maggi. And I wanted to make it even more weird. So, here is my take on the waltz on 4 voices using my trusty Bri (mandolin). I hope you enjoy it.
This waltz has some beautiful lyrics which will be on the Spanish part. It makes reference to the Médanos (dunes) of Coro, our little "quiet Venezuelan desert" located between the city of Coro and the isthmus that connects it to the Paraguaná Penninsula in the norwest of Venezuela.
This is me in 2015 during our last trip around several cities. We went from Cumaná to Barquisimeto and then went over to Coro and then Punto Fijo. Esta es mi participación para el tema de esta semana "Quiet Desert". Cuando leí este tema, no pude sacarme de la mente la idea de grabar otro vals emblemático del repertorio venezolano: Sombra en los Médanos de Rafael Sánchez López. Esta es una de esas piezas que los músicos tradicionales y aficionados a la música venezolana aprenden al comienzo de sus carreras musicales.
Hay muchas versiones de esta canción, pero habrán notado que hago covers instrumentales. My idea para hacer esta versión está inspirada por la grabación del Dr. Jesús Sevillano, la cual es una obra maestra. La versión en sí forma parte de la producción "Canciones Venezolanas Puras" del grupo "Jesús Sevillano y su Sexteto de Cuerdas". No toqué ese arreglo, pero intenté hacer algo involucrando más voces.
Buscando por el internet, encontré un arreglo coral increíble. Este viene de la mente de Gustavo Maggi. Y quise hacerlo un poco más extraño. Así aquí tienen mi versión de este vals en 4 voces con mi confible Bri (mandolina). Espero que les guste.
Cabe destacar que este vals tiene una letra hermosa. Aquí se las dejo. La misma hace referencia a los Médanos de Coro, nuestro pequeño y callado desierto venezolano ubicado entre la ciudad de Coro y el comienzo del estrecho que lleva a la península de Paraguaná localizada en el noroccidente del país.
