Proposal for SGS Splinterlands Cards

Many SGS Community members may not be aware that this account @ssg-community holds a good number of cards for the HIVE blockchain game called Splinterlands. These cards are Non-Fungible-Tokens (NFTs) that are crypto-assets on the HIVE blockchain which have some real market value – possibly in the vicinity of $350 US Dollars if the PeakMonsters website is an accurate guide.

Up until now the account has been played by @welshstacker to accumulate some Quest and Season rewards and he’s done a fantastic job keeping the account ticking over, but it does take a bit of time to maximise those rewards and so we’ve been looking at ways that we can better return value to the SGS Community which owns the account and its assets.

This proposal is about consolidating those community held cards into a solid playable deck that can then be delegated out for a short time to the winner of an auction or raffle. This would act as a fundraiser to bring in an extra revenue stream to support the main curation project of SGS – Precious the Silver Mermaid – and thus benefit the broader community. Because the NFT assets would only be delegated out temporarily, they would still be held by the @ssg-community account and so those cards would then also potentially increase in value over time. Thus this proposal is relatively low risk and is mostly about the community realising maximum value from the assets currently held by generating a dividend.

There would be a few steps involved and some small expenses incurred to get a fundraiser of this type going, so it’s important that members understand these steps and expenses and are supportive of giving this proposal a try. That’s what this post is about – Transparency and Accountability. Here are the steps :-

Step 1 – Resolve Current Delegation Dependence

Firstly, a huge thanks must go out to community members like @senstless, @methus, @jzn and @themanwithnoname who are currently delegating cards to the @ssg-community account which have enabled it to be used to generate rewards to date. However, these delegations cannot be re-delegated out to any auction or raffle winner so this proposal would aim to buy out those delegations (buy the cards currently being delegated) at market rate. Personally I think this is fair to those great members who have delegated for so long without any reward or compensation if they are willing to let those cards go permanently. Alternatively, loans for the cards could be restructured (so they don’t use delegation) if those members do not want to sell. Estimated expense to the ssg-community account would be a maximum of $40 USD but potentially much less depending on how negotiations go with those delegators.

Step 2 – Call for Donations

This would be a broad call to the community and beyond to donate any cards they may have but aren’t using into the "SGS Monster Pit" from which the decks will be consolidated. Even those little 1 cent cards that will never sell on Peak Monsters would be a help as they can be consolidated to level up monsters to help make them competitive and valuable. There may be a substantial number of otherwise useless cards that SGS members are holding that could be put to good use if donated and consolidated into the community account.

Step 3 – Consolidate and Craft Decks

Using all the cards that have been collected, many can be merged to make more powerful monsters that will be more competitive and attractive for potential auction bidders or raffle ticket buyers. In consultation with some of the great minds of SGS who already are heavily into Splinterlands and have agreed to help advise, the goal here is to end up with a solid deck of cards containing monsters from all splinters and capable of being consistently competitive at a Silver or Gold level. Any surplus cards could be traded off to buy complementary cards as part of the deck building process or used to bolster the community funds if no complementary cards are needed. Estimated expense here would be Nett $0 as complementary card purchases would only occur if funded by surplus card sales.

Step 4 – Hold the Raffle and/or Auction

Ideally it would be worth trying both a raffle AND an auction to see which is a more effective fundraiser longer term. Perhaps we would alternate each month for a while. Historically the SGS community loves a good raffle and the idea would be to open it up to the broader HIVE community, just like the old Monster Raffles did (only this one will have REAL Monsters). All funds raised would go to the ssg-community account that is owned by the SGS community.

All up it’s a good opportunity to have some fun and generate some positive activity around SGS while hopefully raising some extra funds from existing assets. There is potential for sponsorships if bigger players want to get involved. The Silver Gold Knights Splinterlands Guild, headed up by @monsterjamgold and which already has many of our great members involved, has agreed to provide free guild membership as part of any prize. We might be able to find some other sponsors with similar synergy to help boost exposure and involvement in our fundraisers. Even the Splinterlands team might see the value in helping us promote this as a community project because it helps promote the game and can help new players try out the game without the big up-front costs associated. There can be good recruitment and promotional potential with a community fundraiser proposal like this even if it doesn’t make much money.
