I got my first formal job when I was 19 years old. A few months before, I worked sporadically and informally first for a customs broker and later for a cereal company. That first job inadvertently led me to the computer science career with which I have worked until now and continue.
It was in the Central Bank of my country, the governing body of the nation's monetary and financial policies, and there I began my career that I had imagined in the labyrinths of the economy, but fate designated me another objective, they sent me to the clearing house, a department within the institution that was then in charge of maintaining the balances of banking entities by mediating the exchange of checks issued and cross-deposited.
There I met for the first time the computers used to perform that task, two huge machines developed by the Burroughs company, which no longer exists, two large devices with little computing power, full of noisy and slow peripherals, although now that I think about it Well, it served its purpose perfectly. Let's agree that this was in the mid-1970s and computing was in its infancy.
He spent less than three years in that enclosure, after suffering a fire that destroyed more due to the power of the water used to put it out than due to the flames that arose from its ceiling, probably caused by some electrical fault that had never been clarified, in the imagination of those who we worked there we always thought it was a rat that caused a short circuit by gnawing on electrical wires. Not long before, a huge rodent of that species had caused a failure in the main board of the complex, although the problem at that time did not escalate, we know it was one of those animals because it was still burning when the security personnel he opened the cover that covered the circuits, buttons, and switches.
I moved to another institution-owned building to start a new role, having become an assembler and Cobol programmer after spending six months receiving instruction at the IBM training school. I changed the brand and model of computers, I went to a much more powerful 4341.
After its repair, the clearinghouse continued to work for a few more years, until the banks convinced the Central to only send a coupon for the balance received in checks from other banks, hundreds of thousands of checks were no longer processed daily, but only a handful of ballots, no more large computers, and many employees were needed, therefore the building was closed for quite some time.
Without knowing what to do with it, since it is considered a historical monument for its beautiful architecture and past, it could not collapse and sell or build in its place some enormous mass of steel and glass, someone had an excellent idea of turning it into a museum. of numismatics, and there it is now, more beautiful than ever and telling the story of banknotes and coins from around the world.
Mi primer trabajo formal lo conseguí a los 19 años, unos meses antes trabajé de manera esporádica e informal para un despachante de aduana primero y para una cerealera después. Ese primer trabajo me llevó sin quererlo a la carrera informática con la que me he desempeñado hasta ahora y sigo.
Fue en el Banco Central de mi país, entidad rectora de las políticas monetarias y financieras de la nación y allí comencé mi carrera que yo había imaginado en los laberintos de la economía, pero el destino me designó otro objetivo, me enviaron a la cámara compensadora, un departamento dentro de la institución que se encargaba por entonces de realizar el mantenimiento de los saldos de las entidades bancarias mediando en el intercambio de cheques emitidos y depositados en forma cruzada.
Allí conocí por primera vez a las computadoras utilizadas para realizar esa tarea, dos enormes máquinas desarrolladas por la empresa Burroughs, que ya no existe más, dos grandes aparatos con escaso poder de cómputo, llenos de periféricos ruidosos y lentos, aunque ahora que lo pienso bien, servía perfectamente para los fines perseguidos. Convengamos en que eso fue a mediados de los años 1970 y la computación estaba dando sus primeros pasos.
En ese recinto estuvo menos de tres años, luego de sufrir un incendio que destruyó más por el poder del agua utilizada para apagarlo que por las llamas que surgían de su techo, probablemente motivado por alguna falla eléctrica nunca aclarada, en el imaginario de los que trabajábamos allí siempre creímos que había sido una rata la que provocó un cortocircuito al roer cables eléctricos. No mucho tiempo antes, un inmenso roedor de esa especie había provocado una falla en el tablero principal del complejo, aunque el problema en ese momento no pasó a mayores, sabemos que fue uno de esos animales porque aun se estaba quemando cuando el personal de vigilancia abrió la tapa que cubría los circuitos, botones e interruptores.
Me fui a otro edificio propiedad de la institución para comenzar una nueva función, me había convertido en programador assembler y cobol luego de pasar seis meses recibiendo instrucción en la escuela de capacitación de IBM. Cambié de marca y de modelo de computadoras, pasé a una mucho más poderosa 4341.
La cámara compensadora luego de su reparación continuó trabajando por algunos años más, hasta que los bancos convencieron al Central de solo enviar un cupón por el saldo recibido en cheques de otros bancos, ya no se procesaban diariamente cientos de miles de cheques sino solo un puñado de boletas, no se necesitaban más grandes computadoras y muchos empleados, por lo tanto, el edificio se cerró por un buen tiempo.
Sin saber bien que hacer con el ya que este considerado monumento histórico por su bella arquitectura y por su pasado, no podía derrumbarse y vender o construir en su lugar alguna enorme mole de acero y cristal, alguno tuvo la buena idea de convertirlo en un museo de numismática, y allí esta ahora, más bello que nunca y contado la historia de billetes y monedas de todo el mundo.
