I visited Öland, Sweden this summer and I went to see this important runestone called Ö1. Ö stands for "Öland" and No.1 is a numeric number categorized by Runedata which we can find in the database of Runestones around the world.

Runedata of Ö1

According to Wikipedia, it says "The Karlevi Runestone, designated as Öl 1 by Rundata, is commonly dated to the late 10th century[1] and located near the Kalmarsund straight in Karlevi on the island of Öland, Sweden. It is one of the most notable and prominent runestones and constitutes the oldest record of a stanza of skaldic verse.[2]" and it continues "The stone is contemporary with the Battle of the Fýrisvellir and it is consequently possible that the stone was raised by warriors who partook in it, in memory of their lord.[5]" - Wikipedia

The battle of the Fyrisvellir was taken place in Gamla Uppsala where I visited the other day. And, it was pretty cool to see the relation between Gamla Uppsala and Öland.

For me as an expat in Sweden, it is fun to learn about Swedish history as well as Viking history. I have been surfing the Internet about Nordic mythology and runestones. Today, the Swedish people do not use the Runic language any longer after it was replaced by the Latin alphabet but learning the Runic language is one way to learn Swedish history, I guess. Plus, it is cool if you can recognize some Runic alphabet, isn´t it?

This runestone shows that some Vikings on Öland were already Christianized since it says "the name of Jesus" on the runestone, and also there is no Nordic mythological design like Nordic gods and names. It is interesting to see how people had started to change their faith and believing in a new religion.

Today, they say that Sweden is one of the most secular countries in the world, and I am interested in wondering what kind of country will Sweden become in the future.
