Hi all š
Today I want to share with you my visit to the ruins of this ancient town : Baelo Claudia, Bolonia Spain.
This visit was 10 January 2019.
During a cloudy and dark dayā¦ which I love as you get some dramatic skies for extra moody photographs, as opposed to the clear blue skies you normally see from Southern Spain š
(part of The Roman theaterā¦)
More info about the Roman Ruins/ town you find
Here (Spanish) And Here (English) and Here (English)
I include a folder and the location from it next.
Location:
Itās about 20 km above Tarifa.
The Roman town from aboveā¦ seen in the museum:
Baelo Claudia was an ancient Roman town, located 20 kilometres (14 miles) above Tarifa, near the village of Bolonia, in CƔdiz province and southern Spain. Lying on the shores of the Strait of Gibraltar, the town was originally a fishing village and trade link when it was settled some 2,000 years ago. Although prosperous at the time of Emperor Claudius, it went into a decline hastened by earthquakes and was abandoned by the 6th century.
The study of its large architectural remains shows its Roman origin at the end of the 2nd century BC, already observed since that time a great wealth that makes it an important economic center in the Mediterranean area.
Let me show you now my visit and photos, following their time stamp š
We walked through the little museum and are following the path around the archeological site. First we see an aqueductā¦
We are passing some wild herbsā¦
View of the area and in the distance the white sand of the famous dune of Bolonia beach. It creates an remarkable backdropā¦ see also my other photos further along.
Views of the theater ruins in the distance.
You see here the architectural remains are vast and you clearly see the walls from the houses. Looking towards the beach.
View behind me.
These are well preserved. Ruins of a factory for salted fish and garum (fish sauce)
The view around the ruins are just breathtaking.
The famous dune of Bolonia š¤©
Letās take a closer lookā¦
Little fishing boats on the beach.
Itās stunning to say the least. Sometimes you find wild horses passing by and cows or goats from neighbouring areasā¦. Itās well known. That is why it is very crowded in the summer months. Now in January while these photos are taken. Nobody to be seenā¦ a bliss š¤©
Just managed to capture the birds in the skyā¦ one of my favourite photos of Bolonia beach š„°
But letās go back to the archeological siteā¦ the Roman ruins š
The backdrop from the hills behind it, itās getting darker now slowly.
I walk past these detailsā¦
Imagine the people that have walked over this floorā¦ itās original and from the 2nd century BC.
The statue in The basilica.
Detail A Corinthian capital.
The Roman theaterā¦
Letās go closer towards the theater.
Passing byā¦
Part of the theater.
The steps
The side of the theater.
A curious dove is inspecting what Iām doingā¦
Letās walk further to the other temples.
Temple detailsā¦
And another oneā¦ I think I just liked the dark backdrop š
The basilica again from the other side with the sea as backdrop.
The tiles in the temples.
View from a higher place towards the ruins.
Viewpoint temple of Isis.
Found some white dried vegetationā¦ the contrast spoke to me. I just had to take this shot š„°
More details around meā¦ did I already say that I love detailsā¦ maybe not in this postā¦ but in most š I love details!
Walking back to the museum againā¦
Passing the aquaduct.
And to finishā¦ this tree.
Hope you enjoyed my photographs of this beautiful area of Spain and the Roman ruins of the town with the dramatic skies š¤©
