In the golden age of reboots, remakes, prequels, sequels and spin-offs it would be too naive for us to think that nostalgia is not the central axis of the film industry nowadays, since it is through that nostalgia that we are dragged again and again to see versions of the same movie we already knew, but with a more detailed aesthetic thanks to the use of better technology, because of this we must know how to recognize a good or bad use of nostalgia, so today I bring to you my opinion about Ghostbuster: Afterlife.
En la época dorada de los reboots, remakes, precuelas, secuelas y spin-off sería demasiado ingenuo de nuestra parte, pensar que la nostalgia no es el eje central de la industria cinematográfica en la actualidad, ya que a través de esa nostalgia es que nos arrastran una y otra vez a ver versiones de la misma película que ya conocíamos, pero con una estética más detallada gracias al uso de una mejor tecnología, debido a esto hay que saber reconocer un buen o mal uso de la nostalgia, por eso que hoy les traigo mi opinión de Ghostbusters: El legado.
If we do not take in count within the canon the controversial 2016 reboot, this latest film is chronologically the third Ghostbusters movie. It should be noted that Ghostbuster Afterlife was directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman who was the director of the first two films released during the 80s and who unfortunately passed away recently this year 2022, so instantly this last film represents a kind of triple tribute, first by the director to the work of his father, who undoubtedly served as a driving force and inspiration for his career. Secondly to the actor Harold Ramis who gave life to the Ghostbuster Dr. Egon Spengler, who as many of you probably know unfortunately also passed away in 2014 and finally we have the great legacy of this franchise, which more than 35 years later continues to resonate in the hearts of great part of the audience.
Si no tomamos en cuenta dentro del canon el polémico reboot de 2016, está ultima cinta cronológicamente viene siendo la tercera película de los Cazafantasmas. Cabe resaltar que Ghostbuster Afterlife fue dirigida por Jason Reitman, el hijo de Ivan Reitman quien fue el director de las dos películas originales de la década de los 80s y que lamentablemente falleció recientemente durante este año 2022, por lo cual instantemente esta última cinta representa como una especie de triple homenaje, primero por parte del director al trabajo de su padre, quien indudablemente fungió como un motor e inspiración para su carrera. En segundo al actor Harold Ramis quien daba vida al caza fantasmas Dr. Egon Spengler que como muchos de ustedes probablemente sepan, desafortunadamente también falleció en el año 2014 y por último tenemos al gran legado de esta franquicia, la cual más de 35 años después sigue resonando en el corazón de gran parte del público.
The truth is that I genuinely think this film has no greater pretension, than paying a tribute to these three elements through a simple but fun story, I mean it is not a film that seeks to overcome or overshadow the original story, but simply to commemorate it and in that sense I must say the film succeeds with that intention, now it is very important to highlight the need to have watched the two original films or at least the first one, since nostalgia is the main protagonist here, so if you do not know the winks and references I think you will hardly be able to connect on a good level with this story.
Viewing things from another perspective by taking away this solid link that many of us have possibly forged with nostalgia and with the passing of the years, simply approaching this Ghostbusters story without knowing any reference, what would be left is a merely entertaining product and maybe for some people just anecdotal, since it does not feel like a story of great proportions, but rather as a temporary look at the adventure of a team formed by two children and two teenagers. At this point I must say that for me it would be very interesting to know the opinion of a child, who does not know any reference or does not have this nostalgic burden with this story, so if you had the opportunity to watch it with a children, nephew, cousin, etc. Please, I cordially ask you to comment on how they felt about this movie.
La verdad pienso que genuinamente esta película no tiene una mayor pretensión que rendir tributo a estos tres elementos, a través de una historia sencilla pero divertida, me refiero a que no es una película que busque superar u opacar al relato original, sino simplemente conmemorarlo y en ese sentido debo decir que la cinta triunfa con esa intención, ahora es muy importante destacar la necesidad de haber visto las dos películas originales o al menos la primera, ya que al ser la nostalgia la principal protagonista, si no conoces los guiños y las referencias pienso que difícilmente vas a lograr conectar a un buen nivel con esta historia.
Yéndonos hacia otra perspectiva y quitándole este vinculo tan sólido que posiblemente muchos de nosotros hemos forjado, con la nostalgia y con el paso de los años con este relato de los Cazafantasmas, acercándonos simplemente sin conocer ninguna referencia, lo que nos quedaría seria un producto meramente entretenido y puede que para algunos anecdótico ya que no se siente como una historia de grandes proporciones, sino más bien como una mirada temporal a la aventura de un equipo formado por dos niños y dos adolecentes. En este punto debo decir que para mí sería muy interesante saber la opinión de un niño que no conozca ninguna referencia o no tenga esta carga nostálgica con esta historia, de verdad si tuvieron la oportunidad de ver la cinta con un niño ya sea hijo, sobrino, primo etc. Por favor les pido cordialmente que comenten como les pareció a ellos esta película.
Something I must highlight because I liked it a lot, is how the director really managed to capture this comic lightness that meets at times with the terrifying that many of us saw in the original movies, where sometimes there are moments and atmospheres that could scare us, but then they are countered with jokes or through caricaturing the ghosts or characters. At the same time I must say sometimes I was a bit taken out of the experience by the fact that some of the main characters did not react to these ghostly entities, i mean they did not startle or question more how the hell there is a ghost out there chewing on things, but then I remembered that these situations also happened in the original films, so in that sense I must say the lack of amazement rather than a defect seems to me a very appropriate tribute.
Algo que debo destacar porque me gusto mucho, es que realmente el director logro capturar esta ligereza cómica que se encuentra por momentos con lo terrorífico que muchos vimos en la cintas originales, donde en ocasiones tenemos instantes y atmosferas que podrían llegar a asustarnos, pero que después se contrarrestan con chistes o a través de una caricaturización de los fantasmas o los personajes. Al mismo tiempo debo decir que a veces me sacaba un poco de la experiencia el hecho que algunos de los protagonistas no reaccionarán a estas entidades fantasmagóricas, ósea que no se sobresaltaran o no se cuestionaran más el cómo rayos hay un fantasma ahí suelto y masticando cosas, pero luego recordé que estas situaciones también sucedían en las películas originales, así que en ese sentido debo decir que la falta de asombro más que un defecto me parece un homenaje bien apropiado.
Now if there is an element that steals the movie and I'm not referring to the practical effects (which by the way I appreciate that they have been like this and not digital, cause they really look great), nor our beloved villain Gozer, but the charisma of Mckenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler, cause we could really think at first instance, that the protagonism would have fallen mainly on the actor Finn Wolfhard for his huge media positioning, mainly due to the popular Netflix show Stranger Things. So I must say that I think it was right that it was done in Mckenna Grace, as she really stands out, managing to build a fairly unique character that although it is new somehow generates some feel of nostalgia, in my personal case she reminded me to the charismatic Egon Spengler, so i automatically got attached to Phoebe.
In conclusion I must say that this film definitely honors the legacy it represents, although I personally think it is not the best adventure for children or teenager audiences. On the other hand, it maybe doesn't manage to fully integrate all its new characters in a way we can really feels the need to see them develop in the future, but it certainly fulfills in offering a well-crafted nostalgic product from the inside out, from the similarity it has with the premise and atmosphere of the original films, as well as the constant references and appearances of classic characters, in a very respectful and at the same time endearing wat. Honestly I found it a very enjoyable and fun movie, which in a way reminded me to some adventure stories I saw as a child or teenager, which I got to watch several times without any problem.
Ahora si hay un elemento que se roba la película y no me refiero a los efectos prácticos (los cuales por cierto agradezco que hayan sido así y no digitales, realmente se ven geniales, tal cual como en las películas originales), ni tampoco nuestro querido villano Gozer, sino el carisma de Mckenna Grace como Phoebe Spengler y es que uno realmente podría pensar en primera instancia, que el protagonismo hubiera recaído principalmente en el actor Finn Wolfhard por su posicionamiento mediático tan grande debido principalmente a la popular serie de Netflix, Stranger Things. Debo decir que me pareció acertado que se hiciera en Mckenna Grace, ya que ella realmente desataca con su carácter, logrando construir un personaje bastante único que aunque es nuevo de alguna manera te genera cierta nostalgia, que en mi caso me recordó al carismático Egon Spengler, así que automáticamente le tomas un gran cariño a Phoebe.
En conclusión debo decir que esta cinta definitivamente le rinde honor al legado que representa, aunque personalmente pienso que no es la mejor aventura para un público infantil o adolescente. Por otro lado quizá no logra integrar completamente a todos sus nuevos personajes, para que uno realmente sienta la necesidad de verlos desarrollarse en un futuro, pero sin duda cumple en ofrecer un producto nostálgico bien elaborado de dentro hacia fuera, desde la similitud que tiene con la premisa y atmosfera de las cintas originales, como las constantes referencias y apariciones de personajes clásicos, de una manera muy respetuosa y al mismo tiempo entrañable. Así que honestamente me pareció una película muy agradable y divertida, que de cierto modo me recordó a algunas historias de aventuras que vi cuando era niño u adolescente, las cuales llegue a ver varias veces sin ningún problema.
