Gaia, aludiendo a la madre de la Tierra, es una película Sudafricana estrenada en el 2021. Del género de eco-horror, suspenso y sobrenatural, este film nos mostrará lo aterrador que pueden ser las fuerzas místicas del bosque en contra de los intrusos (en este caso, los humanos) y cómo el fanatismo excesivo, expresado en devoción, puede enceguecer a las personas al punto de cometer actos atroces (ya lo hemos visto en la religión, racismo, xenofobia, homofobia...).

Dirigida y producida por Jaco Bouwer, Gaia se estrenó en 2021 y no ha recibido muy buenos comentarios de sus espectadores, aunque como todo, depende del gusto del espectador y qué espera de la película. La historia transcurre en el bosque Tsitsikamma de Sudáfrica, y veremos como los gurdabosques Gabi y Winston son atraídos a internarse en la selva por una fuerza fantástica. En toda la película solo veremos a cuatro personas: a los dos guardabosques y a Barend y su hijo Stefan, quienes habitan en el bosque, pero no son los únicos seres vivos involucrados.
Directed and produced by Jaco Bouwer, Gaia was released in 2021 and has not received very good comments from its viewers, although like everything, it depends on the taste of the viewer and what they expect from the film. The story takes place in the Tsitsikamma forest of South Africa, and we will see how the rangers Gabi and Winston are drawn into the jungle by a fantastic force. In the entire film we will only see four people: the two rangers and Barend and his son Stefan, who live in the forest, but they are not the only living beings involved.

Gabi y Winston están haciendo una revisión de rutina con un dron a bordo de un botecito en un río, pero al dañarse el objeto volador, Gabi decide ir a buscarlo a pesar de la continua negación de Winston y se interna en el bosque. Es lo más caché de las películas de terror, tomar las decisiones más p*nd*jas a pesar de la negativa lógica de otro personaje, pero sin este recurso absurdo, no habrían tantas películas de terror. De ahí en adelante, todos sabemos que las cosas empeorarán pero lo divertido es descubrir cómo.
Gabi and Winston are doing a routine check with a drone aboard a small boat on a river, but when the flying object is damaged, Gabi decides to go look for it despite Winston's continued denial and goes into the forest. It's the most cachet of horror movies, making the craziest decisions despite another character's logical refusal, but without this absurd resource, there wouldn't be as many horror movies. From then on, we all know things will get worse but the fun is finding out how.

Posiblemente, el elenco de esta película será uno de los más sencillos de comentar. En primer lugar, la guardabosques Gabi. Interpretada por Monique Rockman, es quien decide bajarse del bote para buscar el dron que se estrelló contra algo... Extraño. Estando internada en el bosque, cae en una trampa que lesiona su pie y fue en ese momento en que se arrepiente de su decisión y pide ayuda a Winston, interpretado por Anthony Oseyemi, quien está ocupado reemplazando las memorias de cámaras en el bosque y no responde su llamado de auxilio. En el anochecer, coneceremos a los otros dos individuos que conforman la historia.
Possibly, the cast of this film will be one of the easiest to comment on. First of all, ranger Gabi. Played by Monique Rockman, she is the one who decides to get off the boat to look for the drone that crashed into something... Strange. Barend, interpretado por Carel Nel (y a mi juicio, el mejor actor de la película por millones de años luz de diferencia) y Stefan, interpretado por Alex van Dyk (padre e hijo en la historia, respectivamente), son dos habitantes del bosque de contextura muy delgada que casi siempre veremos con el cuerpo pintado colores oscuros, buscando camuflarse en el paisaje. A medida que transcurre la película, nos desvelan por qué están ahí y por qué aún no se han ido.
Barend, played by Carel Nel (and in my opinion, the best actor in the film by millions of light years apart) and Stefan, played by Alex van Dyk (father and son in the story, respectively), are two inhabitants of the forest of very thin build that we will almost always see with the body painted dark colors, seeking to camouflage itself in the landscape. As the film progresses, they reveal to us why they are there and why they haven't left yet.
Algo un poco molesto de la película, a mi parecer, son algunos efectos sonoros muy repetitivos y estridentes en ciertas partes, pero en cuanto al apartado visual es muy limpio y bien producido. La trama es sencilla al inicio pero se vuelve un poco confusa desde la mitad de la película hasta que culmina, o es que yo no le encontré el sentido a lo que sucedía.
Something a bit annoying about the film, in my opinion, are some very repetitive and strident sound effects in certain parts, but as for the visuals, it is very clean and well produced. The plot is simple at the beginning but it gets a bit confusing from the middle of the film until it ends, or is it that I didn't make sense of what was happening.

Como comenté previamente, de las actuaciones la que destaco y creo que merece un reconocimiento especial es la de Barend, ya que pone en escena a la perfección la locura y devoción ciega e incuestionable que siente hacia la madre naturaleza. Es increíble cómo es capaz de, con sus expresiones faciales y corporales, transmitirnos ese fanatismo extremo al punto de pensar hacer sacrificios impensables para una persona cuerda. Hay una escena donde Barend da un discurso explicando sus ideas, y me pareció magnífico la fuerza y emoción que le imprime.
As I mentioned previously, of the performances the one that stands out and I think deserves special recognition is that of Barend, since he perfectly stages the madness and blind and unquestioning devotion that he feels towards mother nature. It is incredible how he is capable of, with his facial and body expressions, conveying that extreme fanaticism to the point of thinking of making unthinkable sacrifices for a sane person. There is a scene where Barend gives a speech explaining his ideas, and I thought the strength and emotion that he gave him was magnificent.

🗣 Comentarios finales/Final comments 🗣
En una película de eco-horror espero ver cómo la naturaleza, por sus propios medios, ejerce acciones en contra de lo que considera una amenaza o un estorbo, y eso justamente es lo que tiene esta película. Seres sobrenaturales provenientes del reino Fungi son los encargados de atacar a los humanos para cumplir su cometido, aunque esto es atribuído por Barend como acciones de la Diosa sin hacer referencia exacta sobre quién es esa diosa. Sí hubo escenas en las que me asusté un poco, y lo que me gustó es que no usaron los típicos pero quemados screamers que son muy recurrentes en películas de terror. La tensión se mantuvo muy bien de principio a fin, a pesar de pequeños bajones pero es entendible dado el contexto en que se dan. La escena final me dejó un poco desorientado porque de verdad no entiendo muy bien qué quisieron hacer, pero eso no quita que la película haya sido, dentro de parámetros especiales, buena. Gaia no busca ser taquillera ni dejarse llevar por la corriente de acción, drama y sexo que inunda las series y películas actualmente, sino que está dirigida a quienes tienen un gusto un poco retorcido y oscuro, gustos extravagantes o fuera de norma, y estoy seguro que @jcrodriguez, quien me la recomendó, puede dar fe de ello.
In an eco-horror film I hope to see how nature, by its own means, takes action against what it considers a threat or a hindrance, and that is precisely what this film has. Supernatural beings from the Fungi kingdom are in charge of attacking humans to fulfill their mission, although this is attributed by Barend as actions of the Goddess without making an exact reference to who that goddess is. Yes, there were scenes where I got a little scared, and what I liked is that they didn't use the typical but burnt screamers that are very recurrent in horror movies. The tension was maintained very well from start to finish, despite small dips but it is understandable given the context in which they occur. The final scene left me a little disoriented because I really don't understand very well what they wanted to do, but that doesn't mean that the film was, within special parameters, good. Gaia does not seek to be a blockbuster or get carried away by the current of action, drama and sex that currently floods series and movies, but is aimed at those who have a slightly twisted and dark taste, extravagant tastes or out of the norm , and I'm sure @jcrodriguez, who recommended it to me, can attest to that.
