The Ink Well Prompt #74: The Exchange of Miracles

Marina looked exhausted after she ran a half-mile in South Halan. The distance was good enough for her daily exercise as per suggested by her doctor. She was panting, holding the bottle of water her husband gave to her. A cute pink hello kitty sticker with a big smile can be seen in front of the bottle. There is a printed quote stating, “just believe in miracles.” She stood on the terrace, hugging the cold bottle with her eyes closed.

Her thoughts are running amok as she felt the intense emotions of seeking to have a baby. Hot tears flowed in her red cheeks when she sensed someone cuddling her sweaty back. “It’s alright my love. We can get through this!” said Louis, her 14 years husband. This moment happened frequently due to Marina’s strong desire to have a child. They were trying every possible means to have a baby, yet failure always triumphs.

The hazy morning struck Marina’s plan to eat breakfast in the front yard. Louis received an emergency call from his boss. They will go to Thailand for a business trip at 10 am. Marina noticed her husband’s unusual action so she asked him right away.

“Why are feeling excited? What’s happening, love?” she asked with her brows colliding.
“My boss called, and we have a flight going to Thailand. I’ll be leaving you for a while”, Louis responded.
“I thought you have a one-week vacation? Come on Louis! You promised me to have dinner in West Calipto.” Marina started to raise her voice.
“Love, I’m sorry! This is an emergency and I have to be with my boss. I’m his trusted bodyguard. When I go back, I will bring you your favorite dress. I’ll promise!”

Marina didn’t bother to answer. She knew how her husband could stop their conversation. She went to the kitchen to prepare an egg sandwich with bacon. It was her husband’s favorite since they met and started to build a family.

A cloudy, grayish sky as seen above. The cold wind started to touch Marina’s skin and it was bad weather coming into town. She told her husband to not go and cancel it because their flight might be affected. “Louis, please don’t go! Look at the outside. A storm is coming and for sure your flight will be delayed or canceled anytime. Just call your boss right now” she asked in a trembling voice. “Love, it’s going to be okay, alright? Boss prepared his private plane. It’s 9:10 am. I have to go” he finished the conversation and kissed his wife.

Marina moves aside the big blue heavy curtain in the nearest place where she stands. She saw her husband leaving again, packed with clothes. She missed the days when they were traveling together in Hawaii, Bali, Indonesia, and Paris, France. She covered her face with a white, soft, comfortable pillow. She hid her face for long while crying. She didn’t know she slept for several hours on their sofa.

She woke up around 8:20 pm, feeling hungry, but something is not good in her body. She was feeling nauseous and her vision circling, allowing her not to walk. A few minutes after, she couldn’t stand it and vomit. At that moment, she carried herself to the kitchen, and drink cold water from her favorite pink bottle. It relaxed her mind, but then she was about to go and she vomits again.

Her husband was calling on her phone, and she answered it. “Love, we landed in Thailand at 1:40 pm. I cannot call since my boss went straight to the meeting. I am okay. Have you eaten your dinner?” asked Louis gleefully. “Oh, I am glad you landed safe, love. I, erm, finishing my meal right now” she lied. Marina heard a loud voice calling her husband’s name. She was about to say goodbye when Louis hangs up the phone.

Marina noticed the sudden change in her mood, body, and taste. She suspects that she was pregnant, but that’s impossible. They were trying for several years and she didn’t want to assume she was pregnant. However, a woman’s instinct is to tell her to do a pregnancy test. She wore her denim shorts and oversized pink shirt going to the pharmacy. The cashier gave her three pregnancy tests as per her request. Her mind was full of what-ifs. “What if I am not pregnant?” What if this is false pregnancy?”

She headed home with extreme heaviness and bothered. Marina removed the cap and started to use the pregnancy test. She opened the three pregnancy tests to be sure of the result. All of it has 2 lines, and that confirms she was pregnant for real. Her happiness cannot be contained and jumped several times. She called her husband for the good news. “Louis, I cannot wait to tell you this, and I want you to go home, please!” her call was recorded and she did it again, “Love this is it! The blessing we are waiting for. Come home!” she cried.

Meanwhile, Louis was troubled due to his boss’s business. He did business with a big leader of the syndicate in Thailand. Little did he know that this group had planted a timer bomb in their private plane. They are going home packed with money. Louis bought beautiful pink dresses, crocheted headbands, and a pink pouch. They were in the South China Sea when a loud explosion was heard in one of the wings of the plane. It made the plane twist and lose balance.

Louis panicked, his boss demanded to use a parachute, but none of them can be found inside the cabin. The pilot announced, “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” There were only six of them in the private plane, the two pilots, two cabin crews, his boss, and Louis. At that moment, they lose hope of surviving. Louis brings out his phone and saw two recorded messages. He listened, and after he finished it. He cried with a heavy chest; his tears continue to flow. “My baby! My baby! I am so sorry!” He selected the wedding photo in his gallery and kissed it. Then the plane finally touched the water and started to sink.

The news about a private plane crash in the South China Sea spread like a wildfire. Marina was eating her lunch meal with friends because they were celebrating her pregnancy. But when she saw her husband’s name on the screen. Her skin shivered, and her eyes started to release hot, unhappy, and full of emotional tears. “My husband! My husband!” she shouted. Her friends tap her shoulder and console her. Marina touched her baby bump. “Baby, daddy’s lost!” she murmured with a shaky voice.
