Mythic Weekend Ranked with Only Welcome and Core Cards: War Edition, 12 Wins

Gauntlet WelCore Latest.png

A weekly recap of my Mythic Weekend Ranked experience, this time doing a challenge of only using cards from the Welcome and Core set. This is my second weekend doing this challenge. Previously I completed a Free-To-Play (F2P) Gauntlet with all the Gods to show that they can all compete and get Legendary packs. See the summary thread here.

Weekend 19 April 22nd – 24th

This was an interesting week as I was flying to Paris on a business trip Friday, and while there I knew I wasn’t going to be playing video games haha, so I decided to go with War as it’ll be aggro and have quick games so that I can get the 25 in before my flight. This was also the first weekend ranked after the expansion came out, which made it a bit tougher due to the power creep. I was expecting a little better than this however War did get hit with a nerf this week, of which both cards were in this deck, but I ended up with 12 Wins. Interesting note, this is the lowest number of wins since I started documenting my weekends here!

Here’s the deck that I used, costing 0.0045 ETH or ~$12.

It’s interesting that the most frequent God I faced was Nature; the new expansion had some good regen oriented cards that seemed powerful and maybe that’s why. The fact that I did fall a couple of ranks might be why too, and it coule also explain why I didn’t face too many Death (Anubian) or Deception decks. The new Light and Deception cards felt really strong, and since everyone was basically Aggro my WelCore War deck didn’t have an archetype advantage.

WelCore Analysis

The WelCore cards for War clearly pushed for an Aggro/Viking deck, especially with the Core Refresh. A couple of cards did get nerfed though just before this weekend. There are some cards which made the deck not work as well though without expansion cards. Also, I determined that the new Core Refresh Legendary, Ulfgaar, Eater of Bears, is pretty underwhelming.

Notable WelCore Cards

Enduring Shield and Blade of Styx are really good relics that are a staple to budget War decks and can be used in different archetypes. Orcish Elite is an amazing card that more often than not trades 2-for-1, and it’s an include even in this mostly Viking deck. Tamed Mammoth is usually at least a 4/5 but can keep snowballing after that, definitely a good card after the buff especially since it got the Viking tribe as well.

Missed Cards

Compared to the deck that I used in the F2P Gauntlet Challenge, a few expansion cards were sorely missed. Thunder Caller was a great snowball card that could win you the win if they didn’t have removal and you can Enduring Shield it, and Another Round provided a solid buff at 4 mana to get rid of threats or rushing down your opponent while buffing a creature in your hand as well. Guild Enforcer is just a great all-around card that worked well in this deck, and is an amazing target for Redfume Serum. Sole Survivor is a bit weird for an Aggro deck but gives you a chance to come back after you’ve lost the board.

Going Forward

Next week (well technically this weekend as I’m late posting this haha) I’ll be playing with a WelCore Nature deck; I think Nature has a very good base of WelCore cards and got a bit of Amazon Support from the Core Refresh, but since I don’t have many of them I’ll try Beasts first.

Last DO packs I get from Weekend Ranked and of course I get the most useless Legendary haha.
