MidNight Gems-Undiscovered, Underrated and Forgotten Songs vol.36 "The Peaky Blinder Session"

peaky.png

For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

And Tonight's Episode will be under the protection of The Peaky Fookin Blinders!

How could a series that is using a Theme Song by Nick Bloody Cave not be amazing, because it is and I am not gonna tell you why....Just listen:

1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat / Live From KCRW

No, we will not play the theme song.....but we will start with John's death and Arthur crying his heart out and this genius live version of the Mercy Seat...... thankful to have found this version as I like it so much better than the original. Lord have Mercy on Tommy Shelby´s soul.....forgive him.

2. Laura Marling - What He Wrote

Broken too and spoken for.......How he Became this man? Shellshock has different faces.....but I will always see Tommy´s face.

3. PJ Harvey - When Under Ether - OST Peaky Blinders

For my frequent readers it´s not a secret I am a big Tori fan....but Tori had to beat PJ Harvey years ago to reach that position and I think this song proves that there was a very good reason for that battle..... of course, this not the only PJ song in the series.....but this one jumped out at me so hard I had to share.

4. Radiohead - Life in a Glasshouse | The Peaky Blinders

He´s a creep, but he´s also bloody amazing and yes in this case I am talking about Thom Yorke and Thom Shelby....except for the voice nothing reminds me of Pablo Honey.....except the lucid musical landscape Radiohead creates.

5. Savages - Adore | Peaky Blinders OST

This band was an amazing new discovery thanks to this sick show, which might not be so crazy as they only made 2 albums and that was like 5-8 years ago. But common on this another gruesome musical painting....especially considering the issue that Tommy is not able to Adore Life.

6. Renée Elise Goldsberry - Ain't no Grave

Having a hard time dealing with life...but also not having a no grave that can hold his body down "There is nor est for me in this world, perhaps in the next."

7. Ane Brun - All My Tears( Peaky Blinders - So Fucking Close)

By order of the Peaky Blinders, you need to listen to Ane live all ancient songs but omg she brings them back to life...which is very nice after watching a series that mainly brings death.

8. Laura Marling - A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall (Bob Dylan cover)

Not a huge Dylan fan, but when I heard this I was like ohh that's soo cool a girl singing Dylan style in 2021.....and then I discovered it was covered....but very well done I have to say.

9. RoyalDeluxe - I'm A Wanted Man

I think this last song says it all....hence I am not gonna mansplain it:

I took the pistol and I shot out all the lights
I started running in the middle of the night
The law ain't never been a friend of mine
I would kill again to keep from doing time
You should never ever trust my kind

I'm a wanted man
I got blood on my hands
Do you understand
I'm a wanted man

I'm a wanted man
I got blood on my hands
Do you understand
I'm a wanted man

If you ask me to change
I don't know, if I can
I'll always be, who I am

What the fluff are midnight gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years....Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.

Hope you enjoyed this slightly confronting wave of amazing music and you still feel like joining me on the next trip as vol. 37 of Midnight Gems is coming soon.
