A Visit to the 'Walking Together' Coal Mining Memorial

We revisited nearby Markham Vale to look round the 'Walking Together' project which is a Mining Memorial Heritage Trail commemorating the coal miners who sadly died in three mining disasters in 1937, 1938 and 1973.

There will be 106 steel sculptured figures by the end of the year that have been designed by artist Stephen Broadbent with input from the public.

The route depicts the miner's journey to the pit and back home again.

Each figure has the name of the miner who died, age, occupation and the year of the disaster. The tags on the sculptures look very similar to the ones they'd have on their miner's lamps.

The final sculptures remembering the last 13 miners will be added later this year.

It was good to see more sculptures had been added since I last went. I'm pleased they've acquired more funding to complete the project.
