One mile brewery - Darwin Australia

Okay - time to tell you about the final of THE two breweries in Darwin - This one is called One Mile, because like some country song it's at the end of One Mile Road.

Actually it's in an industrial estate wedged between an airport and a national park, our uber driver seemed very confused at where we were going and kept asking us 'Are you sure you have the right address, and I have to admit I was starting to question myself, until I saw this

This told me we were vaguely in the right place, but still wasn't much help, it turns out if you walk past the truck and around the blue building on the left the brewery is tucked in there.

And when you make it there you are greeted by a little bar to one side, the usual brewing equipment on the other side and instructions to go around the back to drink. They have a functional but not at all pretty beer garden which overlooks the neighbours building supply yard.

So given these ramshackle-ish surronds its a good thing that they make pretty good beer. As you can see from the board quite a number of them, but it should be mentioned this includes Seltzers, a Pink Lemonade (alcoholic) and a Apple cider which they serve in slushie format which I quite like. Oh and there is a Pizza Truck serving pretty good pizzas, that is of course a bit of walk through a corridor next to another factory.

I should tell you it was Saturday afternoon (pre us heading off to the football, which was one of the reasons we were in Darwin), it was hot (it always is), like really hot and humid, about 32 degrees and 75% humidity. So refreshing beers were the order of the day

I'm going to tell you about three beers, all easy drinkers that sum up Darwin/The Northern Territory (NT) and One Mile.

Now The NT is the state (although it's technically not a state it's a territory) which Darwin is in, when you think about Australia this is probably what you imagine, Uluru is in NT (but nowhere near darwin) so is the red centre, the desert, so are the crocdile, Kakadu which is the national park close to Darwin is where a far amount of Crocodile Dundee is shot.

Of course most of Australia is not like this - most of Australia is like Sydney and Melbourne, cities of 5 and 4 million respectively, and they are skyscrapers and traffic and business. This is all to say Darwin is exotic even to Australians, and it sells itself on this 'we are all laidback crazy people up here.'

So let talk about these three beers. There is No Limits IPA, which may seem like a pretty standard name for an what you are going to assume is a Hop Monster, but this isn't, it'd be a pale ale anywhere else, I'm sure the No Limits refers to the fact that until about 5 years ago there were parts of the NT where there we no speed limits. That's right when you have a state which is three times the size of France and only have 250,000 people living in it you have a far amount of space, so why not drive quickly.

Second up - RDO which is a session ale - very refreshing, very easy drinking. Now I'm not sure if a RDO is a term used elsewhere in the world but it's a Rostered Day Off - very popular in the building industry - where they have a day off about every two weeks - God bless the unions.

And third is the 4.21 which is a Kolsch, which as everyone would know if a perfect beer for a hot climate, super, super drinkable. But why 4.21. Well 4.21 is something unique to the NT, in fact many happy hours start at 4.21 and as a tourist it makes no sense. But it comes from the the public service, or government workers. Through a series of events that are complicated the standard hours for the government workers in Australia are 8.30am to 4.51pm (they originally worked 9am to 5pm each weekday and 9-12pm on Saturday but it got adjusted to only Mon-Fri at some point hence the weird 4.51pm stopping time) Now you also need to know that Darwin has a weird timezone (30 mins behind the Eastern States, where Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, which are about 85% of the population are) so they agreed to 8am to 4.21pm to be in line with them. So there is they weird pride in 'finishing' work at 4.21pm

So that Darwin, the NT in One Mile all sums up in three beers, celebrating Not working, sticking it to the government by not giving them anymore that you have to, and not really following the rules.

And yeah I had to get the frozen apple cider and yeah it was weird but hey it was cold and it was refreshing and sometimes that's enough.
