Alaskan Limited Release Midnight Haze IPA vs. Pelican Pilsner

It's been a while since I posted an amateurish beer review. Let's make up for that by reviewing two. Truth be told, both were bought from closeout sales. Are they discontinued locally, overstock, or just no good? Who knows.

The Alaskan Brewing Company is in Juneau, Alaska. Truth in advertising! Their products are generally pretty decent. This one is also good, but in a weird way.

The alcohol content isn't too high at a mere 6%. The flavor is a blend of hoppy IPA and malty porter, though. I don't hate it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to everyone. At least it's not just another can of carbonated pine resin like other northwest breweries churn out. Kudos for trying something unique.

Pelican brewing Company is from Tillamook, Oregon. That town is perhaps better known regionally for the cheese factory.

This is a fairly basic lager with 4.5% ABV, a nice malt, and just enough hops. It's a solid brew with a balance I find satisfying. If you want a refreshing pilsner-style beer, give it a go.

At the risk of being self-indulgent, either of these pair well with my pretzel experiments. To be honest, though, I think the basic pilsner is the better beer of these two. I want to support the ambitious limited release, and I do like it, but the Pelican Pilsner is just better all around even if it does make this post feel like a cop-out supporting a well-crafted but basic beer.

If you are interested in drafting and engineering, I do recommend Engineering Drawing & Design from Delmar, but get something newer than this 3rd edition copy from 2004 unless you really care more about board drafting than CAD. Standards have changed slightly, and technology has advanced considerably. It still makes a decent photography stage though, and it has lots of reference info I still use.
