The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord or the Transfiguration Church is not only a religious landmark of Mogilev, but also one of the largest cathedrals in Belarus. The building can accommodate about 3.5 thousand people at the same time. Despite its architectural grandeur, the Transfiguration Church was built relatively recently in 2015. Its construction lasted 15 years with the money of enterprises, citizens and foreign investors. Near the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord is striking in its grandeur. To contemplate the elements of the facade, you have to constantly raise your head up and move away.
The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built in the Old Russian style. This is evidenced by the five-dome composition of the building, decorative elements. The height of the building reaches 60 meters in height, which is 20-25 meters higher than the ten-story residential buildings around. Thus, the domes of the Transfiguration Cathedral are visible for many kilometers around. The building is 51 meters long and 33 meters wide. Each dome weighs at least 12 tons. The parameters are amazing. This is probably the largest Orthodox church I have ever seen.
The cathedral has 3 identical entrances that do not visually differ from each other. I always pay attention to windows as one of the main elements of churches. Here they are an integral part of the style of the building.
On the reverse side there are three semicircular apses in which the altar parts of the cathedral are located. In all Orthodox churches, apses and altars are located on the eastern part of the building. The fact is that, according to custom, it is necessary to pray with faces turned to the east. This temple has a separate entrance to the altar.
There is a small administrative building nearby. Nuns live there, inventory and church utensils are stored. The building has the same white color and a small dome. There is also a small bell tower.
Every time I survey places of worship or other interesting architecture, I strive to get inside and take a few pictures. Sometimes the rules do not allow me to take pictures inside, and sometimes the building turns out to be closed. But this time it was January 6, Orthodox Christmas Eve. For this reason, I was able to capture the interior of the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
The interior is modest. In a huge hall there are many icons with the faces of saints. The interior is dominated by white light, which blends perfectly with the lacquered wood. Massive columns are crushed upwards, merging with each other forming arches. Thanks to the location of the windows, the church is very bright. Raising your head up you run into high ceilings and this can make your head spin. Hanging golden chandeliers look great against their background.
The Transfiguration Cathedral left an indelible impression on me. This is a majestic modern building whose history is just beginning. A friendly atmosphere reigns in one of the largest churches in the country. Currently, the Transfiguration Cathedral serves as a place of attraction not only for local residents, but also for guests of the city who want to see the building of the famous church in person. I hope that you managed to enjoy the architecture of one of the largest and most modern churches in Belarus.
