Consumer Price Index (CPI) is put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It measures the monthly changes in prices that individual in the United States pay. This uses a weighted average of a basket of goods and services to derive the results.

The study uses more than 90,000 pricing points by surveying individuals and and merchants.

Markets use this as the barometer on inflation and deflation.
