IS A DEGREE IMPORTANT IN 2021?

Earlier today i was watching a show on youtube where the cast members were deliberating over the importance of a degree in 2021. So in this post, i will be sharing my two cents on the matter.

Personally, a degree hasn’t played much of an important role in my life. I graduated from Uni about three years ago with a degree in insurance and i am yet to practice. There is a huge chance that i would never be an insurer. There is the age factor to consider (I am 27) and also my life has taken a different turn career-wise.

Currently, i am a content creator for a step-up company and well, i write on hive. 100% of my income comes from creating content. I am also an aspiring web developer ( that has been put on hold for now) and most of the resources i need to be proficient in web development are online (for free), so there isn't much need for a uni certificate.

Given my career path, i have little or no use for a degree. In retrospect, i would be in a better position if i did not pursue a degree ( in a course i knew nothing about). My uni days were horrible, so socially i benefited little. Some of the most depressing times of my life were in uni. However, i meant the love of my life in uni, so i guess that evens things out.

Would i advise anyone not to go to uni? Certainly not, especially in this part of the world where education is subsidized by the government ( although the quality can be questioned). It is a great opportunity to build your network/social capital--which for me is a major/only incentive.

Frankly, there isn’t much happening in federal universities in this part of the world. So if you aren’t studying something essential like medicine, law, and engineering, it is a waste of time--not a total waste.

During my four years in uni i abandoned everything i cared about writing, chess, etc to pursue a degree i did not need. I gained most of the valuable skills i needed prior to my uni days and that has sustained me till this point, athough I did learn about hive in uni. This is why I emphasize the social relevance of being in a university setting.

LIke i said earlier, i would not discourage anyone from going to uni. I have two siblings who are going to be in uni next year, hopefully. However, i think self-discovery is more important than a degree.

It is quite conflicting for many young people, especially in this part of the world to find where they fit. My advice is to such people is to explore as much as they can. Don’t be too quick to put yourself in a box. I have always wanted to be a writer (thankfully, i am) but also i have grown some interest in programming. My point: your life isn’t about one thing.

A curious mind and an appetite for learning is the perfect recipe for success. Don’t get hooked on the social media noise. Find yourself and your passion. It is certainly going to be a difficult journey but i believe if you stay committed to the course you would find your way around the confusions and uncertainties of life.

Having a degree does not guarantee a successful life but if you can afford to get one, then you should. There are a lot of resources online you can access freely that would certainly put you on the right part. You can explore your passion and find out where it leads you and then build from there.
