What is a Witness?
A witness in terms of the Hive blockchain is someone who runs a computer that confirms all the transactions on the Hive blockchain. Let's break this down to be easily understood...
Blockchain: Let's think about a checkbook ledger. This is the place where people born before 1990 kept track of when they used a check and how much money they had left in their bank account. You know what a check is...the checkbook ledger looked like this:
Every time you turned the page, you were supposed to carry the balance from the last line on the previous page and enter it at the top of the new page. If you consider each full page to be a block of data, then the whole book would be a chain of blocks tied together...thus the block chain.
Hive is a big checkbook ledger. A witness makes sure that before we turn the page, all the transactions on the page/block are correct and make sense. They also match these pages to the previous pages to make sure everything matches. This is how the system is secured.
@psyber.witness is securing the blockchain like all the other witnesses. When you vote for a witness, you're putting your confidence in the person (or people) who's running the account and their equipment's ability to keep our system secure.
