The theme of love triangles is something that has been seen in many series and movies regardless of the genre, but this one really caught my attention because of what is seen behind it all, how the story is handled and the art reflected in it, but above all the theme of idealization.
La temática de los triángulos amorosos es algo que se ha visto en muchas series y películas independientemente del género de la misma, pero esta captó mucho mi atención por lo que se ve detrás de todo, el cómo se maneja la historia y el arte reflejado en ella, pero sobretodo el tema de la idealización.
Les Amours Imaginaires (o Heartbeat como se le titula a nivel internacional) es una película franco-canadiense de género drama romántico escrita, producida, dirigida e incluso co-protagonizada por Xavier Dolan en el año 2010 con tan solo 21 años de edad. Esta es la segunda película de Dolan y tuvo reconocimiento en su momento dejando en claro como era y es la visión de él como escritor y director.
The film is about two young close friends in their twenties, Francis (Xavier Dolan) an openly gay man with many insecurities due to his constant love rejections, with an eye for art and Marie (Monia Chokri) an eccentric woman, with a unique identity to express her vintage way to dress, walk and expressions. Both were at a dinner party with mutual friends but to the dinner was invited a friendship of one of the presents, Nicolas (Niels Schneider), an attractive, nice man with a lot of charisma who quickly caught the attention of both, after interacting with him on an meal, both Francis and Marie begin to feel much more interest in Nico, he possessed all the characteristics they both liked in someone, from intelligence, charisma, hardworking, his taste in literature and music, the taste of movies, everything. The friendship of the three becomes stronger, to the point that they spend the night together watching movies and sleeping in the same bed but with time to share what at the beginning was just wanting a friendship was little by little wanting more than just that and without noticing it they begin to compete for Nico's attention, not knowing exactly what he wants or if in fact he wants either of them, putting at risk the friendship of both and exposing their needs, anxieties and fears, even losing the dignity to win Nico's love.
La película trata de dos jóvenes entre sus veintes muy amigos, Francis (Xavier Dolan) un hombre abiertamente gay con muchas inseguridades debido a sus constantes rechazos amorosos, con buen ojo para el arte y Marie (Monia Chokri) una mujer excéntrica, con una identidad única para expresar su forma de vestir vintage, y al caminar y expresarse. Ambos se encontraban en una cena con amigos en común pero a la cena se le añade una amistad de alguien presente, Nicolas (Niels Schneider), un hombre atractivo, simpático y con mucha carisma que rápidamente captó la atención de ambos, tras interactuar con él en una salida, tanto Francis como Marie empiezan a sentir mucho más interés en Nico, el poseía todas las características que a ambos les gustaba en alguien, desde la inteligencia, el carisma, lo trabajador, su gusto por la literatura y la música, el tipo de películas. La amistad de los tres se hace más fuerte, al punto de que llegan a pasar la noche juntos viendo películas y durmiendo en la misma cama pero con cada salida lo que al inicio era solo querer una amistad fue a poco a poco querer más que solo eso y sin notarlo empiezan a competir por la atención de Nico, sin saber exactamente que quiere él o si de hecho los quiere a alguno, poniendo en riesgo la amistad de ambos y dejando expuestas sus necesidades, ansiedades y temores, perdiendo incluso la dignidad para ganarse el amor de Nico.
At various points in the film we are shown scenes that at first glance seem not to belong to it, are a set of "interviews" to several people where they talk about their crushes, heartbreaks, disappointments and reflections on the matter, it may seem out of place but is actually correlated with the understanding of the film and also serve as a message to the viewer so they are not at all to miss it.
En varios puntos de la película nos muestran escenas que a primera vista parecen no pertenecer a la misma, son un conjunto de “entrevistas” a varias personas donde hablan de sus enamoramientos, desamores, decepciones y reflexiones al respecto, puede verse fuera de lugar pero está en realidad correlacionadas con el entendimiento a fondo de la película y sirven además como mensaje para el espectador así que no son para nada para pasarlas desapercibidas.
- Now, I want to talk about an important point that is present in the film and it is the idealization of the person. As many well know, idealization is attributing an excessive amount of positive traits to a person, even placing them on a kind of "pedestal", they are seen as an ideal and perfect person for those who idealize them, and this can lead to obsession and emotional dependence and a constant fear of not corresponding to that ideal being. This is something that can be seen here on the part of Marie and Francis, both visualize Nico as the perfect one for them, but here is the curious thing, they are both different people with different mentalities but both see Nico as perfect in their own way because of the characteristics they liked about him, at no time did they consider that maybe it was all in their imagination, that maybe they were exaggerating with their thoughts and desires, they let themselves be carried away by the signs they supposedly saw in Nico to draw conclusions or simply feed their expectations, they lived in a constant stress to try to get his attention and be the main focus of their affections, even ending up falling into desperation to adapt as best as possible to him so he would not hate or reject them. It is difficult to remove the blindfold until something happens that makes you see the reality of who is the person that you are idealizing.
- Ahora, quiero hablar de un punto importante que está presente en la película y es la idealización de la persona. Como muchos bien saben, la idealización es atribuirle una cantidad excesiva de puntos positivos a una persona, incluso colocarla en una especie de “pedestal”, se le ve como una persona ideal y perfecta para quien lo idealiza, y esto puede llegar a la obsesión y dependencia emocional y un temor constante de no corresponder a ese ser ideal. Esto es algo que se puede ver acá por parte de Marie y Francis, ambos visualizan a Nico como el perfecto para ellos, pero he aquí lo curioso, ellos dos son personas diferentes con diferentes mentalidades pero ambos ven a su manera a Nico perfecto por las características que les gustaba de él, en ningún momento consideraron que tal vez todo estaba en su imaginación, que tal vez exageraban con sus pensamientos y deseos, se dejaban llevar por las señales que supuestamente veían en Nico para sacar conclusiones o simplemente alimentar sus expectativas, vivían en un constante estrés por tratar de llamar su atención y ser el principal foco de sus afectos, terminando incluso a caer en desesperación por adaptarse lo mejor posible a él para que no los odie o rechace. Es difícil quitarse la venda de los ojos hasta que algo ocurra que te haga ver la realidad de quien es genuinamente a quien idealizas.
- The performances of the characters seemed impressive to me, very natural and I emphasize how they showed emotion, anxiety, stress, jealousy, disappointment and expectation, a perfect gesticulation that went beyond just the face but also in the hands and feet. Even the secondary characters such as those in the "interviews" and the filler characters played their part very well, even if it was only in one scene, I must say that the naturalness is palpable although sometimes what looks unnatural are the dialogues (but I leave this as an observation since they may simply be like that in the French part of Canada).
- Las actuaciones de los personajes me parecieron impresionantes, muy naturales y hago mucho énfasis en como manifestaban la emoción, la ansiedad, el estrés, los celos, la decepción y expectación, una gesticulación perfecta que iba a más allá de solo el rostro sino también en las manos y pies. Hasta los personajes secundarios como los de las “entrevistas” y los de relleno hicieron muy bien su papel así haya sido de una sola escena, debo decir que la naturalidad es palpable aunque en ocasiones lo que se ve antinatural son los diálogos (pero dejo esto en observación ya que puede que simplemente así sean en la parte francesa de Canadá).
- There is also a strong involvement of music, during several scenes it plays an extremely important role to not only set the mood but to give emphasis to the feeling that is being visualized, being the main theme "Bang Bang" by Dalida which appears in the moments when the two friends are living the expectations for the moment when they meet Nico. The use of the song "Le temps est bon" by Isabella Pierre in the scene of the first departure of the three was sublime, every fraction of a second was slowed down to match the rhythm of the song to give attention to the expressions and gestures of the characters. I must say that I thought it was beautiful that classical music was used for the sex scenes, it gave a nice artistic touch showing an emotional vulnerability.
- Además hay una fuerte implicación de la música, durante varias escenas esta juega un papel sumamente importante para no solo ambientar sino darle énfasis al sentimiento que se está visualizando, siendo el tema principal “Bang Bang” de Dalida la cual aparece en los momentos en que los dos amigos están viviendo las expectativas para el momento en que se encuentren con Nico. El uso de la canción “Le temps est bon” de Isabella Pierre en la escena de la primera salida de los tres fue sublime, cada fracción de segundo fue ralentizado para ir acorde al ritmo de la canción y así darle atención a las expresiones y gestos de los personajes. Debo decir que me pareció hermoso que se usara música clásica para las escenas de sexo, le dio un buen toque artístico mostrando una vulnerabilidad emocional.
- Just as music and acting play an important role, so do colors, what do I mean by this? I mean that in some scenes one color is used for the whole frame, not only does it help the "set" and impact of the film, but if you go deeper you can perceive how they represent emotions for the characters involved.
- Así como la música y la actuación juegan un papel importante, también lo hacen los colores, ¿a qué me refiero con esto? A que en algunas escenas se usa un color para todo el recuadro, no solo ayuda al “decorado” e impacto de la película, sino que la ir más a fondo se percibe como estos representan emociones para los personajes implicados.
- I want to mention a part of the film that I found fascinating, at a party Nico is seen drunk dancing in the middle of the room along with others, while Francis and Marie stand watching him from a distance, the gaze of both is lost in detail and between seconds of colors and music images of the sculpture of David by Michelangelo and other artistic works (which I honestly failed to identify) are seen, I interpret it as a way of saying that they admired and desired him, his intelligence, his perfect aesthetics, his cunning, his strength, Nico was art for them.
- Quiero mencionar una parte de la película que me pareció fascinante, en una fiesta se ve a Nico borracho bailando en medio del salón junto con otros, mientras que Francis y Marie se quedan viéndolo a distancia, la mirada de ambos se pierde en detallarlo y entre segundos de colores y la música se ven imágenes de la escultura de David de Miguel Ángel y otras obras artísticas (que sinceramente no logré identificar), lo interpreto como una forma de decir que ellos lo admiraban y deseaban, su inteligencia, su perfecta estética, su astucia, su fuerza, Nico era arte para ellos.
- The setting was good, although the film is so focused on feelings and emotions that the places where the events take place are not taken as a priority, but the detailing of them shows very well not only the natural but also the contrasts in the decoration of the houses that go according to everything, also the scenes in the streets are fresh and natural.
- La ambientación fue buena, aunque la película la siento tan enfocada en los sentimientos y emociones que poco se toma como prioridad los sitios donde se enfocan los hechos, pero al detallarlos se ve muy bien no solo lo natural sino los contrastes de decorado en las casas que van acorde con todo, también las escenas en las calles resultan frescas y naturales.
- And last but not least the use of cigarettes, God! I think most of the budget went on cigarette boxes for the characters, although I think there is an emotional reflection in this, they use it a lot to drain the anxiety they have in many of the scenes.
- Y de último destaco el uso del cigarrillo, ¡Dios! Creo que la mayor parte del presupuesto se fue en cajas de cigarro para los personajes, aunque creo que hay un reflejo emocional en esto, lo usan mucho para drenar la ansiedad que poseen en gran parte de las escenas.
Personally I liked the film very much, it is not an Oscar of course, but it is an enjoyable film from its dramatic point of view and it is art for the viewer taking into account acting, costumes, color, photography, music and camera changes. The main message I saw was focused from the idealization using the love triangle as a sample for the message, a point that reinforces me to believe this is the title as it can be translated to "The imaginary loves", and a person with idealizes another falls into living an imaginary love story. I emphasize that the scenes of the "interviews" is very good and is not to ignore, you have to see it beyond the literal, are representations of casual situations that can happen to anyone. I recommend this film but keep in mind that you should not watch it with the expectation that stories will happen beyond how the love triangle develops, personally I would have liked to see a little more and learn more about Francis and Marie.
En lo personal a mí me gustó muchísimo la película, no es un Oscar por supuesto, pero si es una película disfrutable desde su punto dramático y es arte para el que lo ve tomando en cuenta actuación, vestuario, color, fotografía, música y cambios de cámara. El mensaje principal lo vi fue enfocado desde la idealización usando el triángulo amoroso como muestra para el mensaje, una punto que me refuerza a creer esto es el título ya que puede traducirse a “Los amores imaginarios”, y una persona con idealiza a otra cae en vivir una historia de amor imaginaria. Recalco que las escenas de las “entrevistas” es muy bueno y no es como para ignorar, hay que verlo más allá de lo literal, son representaciones de situaciones casuales que puede pasarle a cualquier persona. Recomiendo esta película pero hay que tener en cuenta que no hay que verla con la expectativa de que pasarán historias más allá de cómo se desarrolla ese triángulo amoroso que en lo personal si me hubiese gustado ver un poco más y conocer más a fondo a Francis y Marie.
