Interlude – Mary's Book (D&D story)

Hello Everyone!

I hope you liked Mary’s adventures so far! After this episode I’m going to take a short break but feel free to ask anything about the characters or the story and I’ll make sure to answer (at least with what I know or what our DM allows) :) I’ll post some art, too :)

Anyway. Here’s what happened after Mary and Aurum came back from their solo adventure.

Bruno might have been grumpy but he wasn't unreasonable. He said he didn't need two tired humans who've missed their sleep entirely that night, so he let them catch up on their Z-s.

They woke up in the early afternoon, fresh and full of energy for the coming journey.

"I was in camp while you slept," the dwarf informed them pointedly. "I saw a cart moving west. Didn’t wake you up because it was too far away to be of any interest. There were a few elves around it and a cage on top. I don't know if it was important but…"

A squeal of joy cut him off. Mary had just moved a fold on her sleeping bag to reveal a brand new book. It wasn’t there when she went to bed and it was so beautiful! Its covers were made entirely out of wood, with thin branches growing out and intertwining on the surface. Small green leaves and white flowers shyly peaked out of the thick growth.

Mary opened the book with reverence. Right on the first page, with small and tidy handwriting, was written

“Expectations met are the highest praise.”

The next pages were filled with instructions on how to do certain simple spells. Those were the exact ones that Mary had recently been dreaming of being able to do!

“This must be a present from my Patron!” she exclaimed to her companions. “He was obviously so happy with my success in the Trial that he gave me an extra reward! Look! There are spells in here! Isn’t that amazing? I’m going to learn them so well! He’s going to be so proud of me!”

Bruno and Aurum exchanged a look. This wasn’t going to end well.

The next few days were a test for their patience. They were the only targets that Mary could practice on, until her cantrips became second nature. So, it was often that one could see strangely colored lights circling Aurum’s head or hear Bruno shout “Mary, STOP Messaging me while I’m taking a piss!”

But it was all for a good cause, as Mary tried to convince them. Once she learned the cantrips well enough, she was going to do great things with them!

And so, their journey continued.

I hope you liked this mini-chapter! Next post will be a look at Mary’s new abilities and spells from a meta and roleplay perspective (i.e. why I chose them and how they work).

Thank you so much for reading! Again, feel free to ask any questions about the story :)

Take care and be well!
