Interlude – On Mary’s new magic (D&D meta)

Hello, Everyone!

I’m so happy to have come so far writing about our dear Mary Windfiddle! She has been a joy to think about – in fact all of our campaign has been wonderful!

This post is a little meta, with elements that didn’t make it to the previous chapters but are nonetheless interesting.

Like, for example, did you know that Mary is now Level 3? That means that, as a Warlock, she gets a Pact Boon (i.e. her Patron is so happy with her service that he gave her a present. You’ve already read about that).

At first our DM suggested I get the Pact of the Chain which gives Mary a Familiar she could use to talk to her Patron and do other neat things like fight, spy or carry the effect of her spells to her companions.

However, when I saw that there was a Pact of the Tome, I just couldn’t not take it. Mary is, after all, a book worm and this Pact meant that she gets a new book full of spells!

So, now she’s got three new cantrips that she can use whenever she feels like it.

The first one is Dancing Lights. After she saw how useful Aurum’s Light spell was, Mary wanted a light of her own. But since she likes shinier and cuter things, the four lights that her spell produces are in the shape of butterflies, their color depending on her mood and desire.

The second spell in her book is Spare the Dying. When that living tree pierced Aurum’s chest in their last adventure, she felt helpless. She was the only other person there and if he’d fallen in this encounter, she wouldn’t have been able to do anything to save him! So, she got this spell which enables her to stabilize an unconscious person. She hopes never to have to use it but who knows? Better safe than sorry!

Her third new spell is Message. She thought it was a neat ability – to talk to her companions without anyone else hearing her words. And, as we’re going to see in the future, this has turned out to be a life-saver. Literally.

An interesting bit of story: for the Message cantrip to work properly, Mary needed a certain component to channel her power through: a piece of copper wire. She found some in Bruno’s belongings and took it, then tried to make it into a ring so she’d be able to wear it all the time. However, I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, but Mary was never good in arts&crafts. When Bruno found her about an hour later, her hands were covered with scratches and little holes where the wire had jabbed inder her skin, and the little hoop that she’d managed to make was definitely not usable as a ring. After scolding and healing her, the dwarf helped make the trinket. And now, every time Mary needs to use the Message spell, she utters the magic words and touches the ring.

I made one for myself as well, and wear it during our game sessions. I really like it! <3

Mary has a couple of other new spells but I’m not going to tell you what they are yet. You’ll get to experience them when she does, in their next adventure.

I hope you like her story so far!
Here’s to many more!
Take care and be well!
