Mexican Murals - Aquatic Chabacano [CCC's Street Art Contest #58]

I know, I may be riding around the same old, same old, even though it's far from being old, let alone the same. Okay, the location is the same: Chabacano Metro Station in Mexico City. And the reason I keep coming back here are the numerous murals to be found all over this relatively huge transfer station, where three of Mexico City's metro lines meet. Not only that, but these works of street art are all amazing enough to use them in CCC's Street Art Contest.

Lady of the Water With Iconic Creatures

The image I want to share with you today can be found right next to last week's post, and should therefor be included among the “Chicas of Chabacano”. However, the style, and hence the artist, is a different one: Jocky.elle! And in this image she included another very iconic animal, which these days is unfortunately among the most endangered ones in the region: the axolotl. Native to the shallow waters of the vast lake that the area of this immense city used to be, this cute amphibian still exists in small pockets of water in Xochimilco and Tlahuac in the southeast of Mexico City.

Since the mural is facing a busy throughway running on both sides of the metro line, I had to wait for the perfect moment to take this picture without any traffic rushing past. It was not easy, and I ended up with lots of discarded ones. Except for the one with the taxi. What used to be the green Beetles have become the pink Tsurus: typical taxis offering a typical image of the city. For this reason, let me include the same photo here. It even matches the color of the axolotls!
